It defines an SV test using observations of the radiometric standard star Eta Ursa Majoris to calibrate the photocathode granularity and diode to diode response variations. Three positions are calibrated for each detector, corresponding to the wavelengths of important interstellar features. For Echelle A they are lambda = 1355, 1550,and 1657 A. For Echelle B they are lambda = 2325,2600, and 2796 A. Exposures of the internal flat field lamps will be used to evaluate their usefulness for calibrating detector nonuniformities. Scientific Justification. Both detectors have response irregularities with spatial scales comparable to the diode size, which vary with location on the cathode and with wavelength. In addition, the diodes themselves show slight differences in sensitivity. These effects will limit the ultimate S/N achievable, and will make precise measurements of weak and narrow features difficult. The internal flat field lamps may be useful to some extent, but their monochromatic spectrum (lamda=1470 A) and direct optical path combine to illuminate the detectors differently than a stellar source. Since the variations are small - a few percent RMS - good photon statistics are required, on the order of 1X10E5 cts/diode. It is impractical to calibrate all wavelengths in all dispersive modes. This proposal describes observations at six wavelengths in the Echelle modes. We plan to calibrate the photocathode irregularities at these positions for both science apertures. The granularity will be analyzed both from the stellar continuum data and observations of the flat field lamps. Correlation of the results will indicate the extent to which lamp spectra can be used for flat fielding stellar data. The data will also allow the diode to diode nonuniformities to be measured with both stellar and lamp illumination. These exploratory observattions will characterize the effects and develop the strategies for calibrating them at other wavelengths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Eta UMa is a nearby, early type star with a bright UV continuum and few spectral features at the wavelengths of interest. Observations for Echelle A are defined by the sequence EASEQ, and for Echelle B by EBSEQ. They are essentially identical, with only minor exposure time differences, and the presence of short DARK exposures with ECH-A. The sequence begins with a WAVE exposure on lamp SC2, which includes deriving a new SPYBAL offset for that wavelength. The star is then observed through the LSA. The substep pattern makes four samples per diode, with two background bins. Four point comb-addition (pattern # 7) is used for the granularity tests. Spectra are taken at four adjacent carrousel positions (FP- SPLIT=4), to allow separation of cathode features and spectral features. The exposure time will accumulate approximately 10000 cts/diode in each spectrum bin. Three INTFLAT exposures at these same Y deflections will measure the granularity as illuminated by the lamp. The star is then translated to the SSA. The spectral sequence of 4 carrousel positions will be repeated twice. One time will use the same pattern # 7, and the other will use pattern # 7. This is the same co-add sequence, but without comb-addition. The no comb-addition data are necessary to derive the diode to diode calibration. This sequence is performed at six locations: ECH-A m=42, lambda=1355, OI; m=36, lambda=1550, C IV; m=34,lambda=1657, C I; ECH-B m=24, lambda=2325, C II; m=22, lambda=2600, Fe II; and m=20, lambda=2796, Mg II. Extensive INTFLAT maps have been made during the ground based test programs. The six groups are independent of each other and may be scheduled in whatever order the ST ScI feels is best.
