Abstract This is an OV test of the initial high voltage turn-on of the FOS red and blue detectors. This test is designed to provide for controlled increases in the high voltage with a dark count taken at each voltage for real-time analysis for detection of corona emission. If at any voltage step, the dark counts look unusually high, we plan to stop this activity and reset the voltage to 0. Non-SAA-impacted orbits must be used for this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 2163c PI: William Baity Proposal Title: FOS-OV 60/70 SLOW HIGH VOLTGE TURN-ON ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ William Baity UNIV. OF CA - SAN DIEGO USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. OBSERVATION DESCRIPTION: 1 - This test brings the FOS from hold mode to an operational configuration with the high voltage at 0 volts, then increases the HV from 0 to 600 volts. HV is left at this setting for 2 minutes while a dark background accumulation is taken. The HV is then reset back to 0 volts while the dark count data are reviewed for corona emission. The dark count data have been flagged for real-time analysis with a 75 wait time for analysis in the exposure logsheets. If corona emission is found at any step, then the HV is to be reset to zero, FOS brought to HOLD mode, and the test terminated. 2 - In the next sequence, the HV is increased to 1000 volts for 2 minutes while dark counts are obtained. The voltage is then reset to 600 volts while the data is analyzed. 3 - In the next sequence, the HV is increased to 2000 volts for 2 minutes while dark counts are obtained. The voltage is then reduced to 1000 volts while the data is analyzed. 4 - In the following sequences, the voltage is raised to 5000, 8000, 11000, 14000, 17000, 20000, and 22000/23000 volts for 2 minutes while dark counts are obtained. The voltages are reduced to 2000, 5000, 8000, 11000, 14000, 17000, and 20000, respectively. 5 - In the next sequence, the voltage is raised again to 22000/23000 volts, then 5 consecutive 2 minute dark counts are obtained. 6 - After a 90 minute wait with the voltage maintained at 22000/23000, the 5 consecutive dark counts are repeated three times. 7 - Note that since a special flow is needed (to disable reconfiguration), the last line in the Exposure Logsheet for each detector explicitly turns off the high voltage. The analysis of each step of the test (i.e. the data taken with line 4) will be to examine the total counts in the spectrum. If coronal emission is present, the counts will be elevated from the expected level. If the total counts in the spectrum exceed the level which the IDT feels is appropriate, the next real-time interaction will be deleted and the command load will be allowed to bring the FOS to the SAFE configuration. As per Skip Schiffer, it is recommended that for the commanding for the real-time decision, the SMS contain the following inline RTCS definition: RTS ;Load RTCS BEGINDATA /MCTOFSW,FOS,FLAG5 ;Reset timeout /MRSTTBSW,FOS,FLAG5 ;Reset event flag /MWSPEVSW,FOS,FLAG5 ;Wait for flag /MJUMPSW,SAFEIT INCLUDE xxxxx ;Set the FOS High Voltage /MJUMPSW,DONE SAFEIT: /MINTSFSW,FOS ;Safe the FOS END: /MNOOPSW ENDDATA RTSCTRL ;Activate the RTCS COMCON ;Link must end before event wait Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. NON-SAA-ORBITS This activity requires non-SAA-impacted orbits. This test has been designed to provide for a slow HV turn-on with monitoring of the FOS at each increased HV settings. As passage through the SAA will require that the HV DAC be reset to 0 volts, as many non-SAA-impacted orbits as possible should be contiguosly scheduled for this activity. If SAA-impacted orbits occur during this test, the FOS should be brought back to HOLD mode, with the HV DAC set to 0 volts. Once non-SAA-impacted orbits can be scheduled, the test can continue where is left off. REAL-TIME REQUIREMENTS RT analysis of the dark counts are required between HV increases to look for corona emission. A 75 minute timescale has been allocated for the analysis. If any of the dark counts looks unusually high, then the activity will be stopped and the HV DAC reset to 0 volts. For this reason, a real-time uplink is required between the end of the analysis time and the next HV increase, at which time either the HV will be increased, or the activity will be halted. A real-time downlink is also required to obtain the dark count data for analysis. OV PREREQUISITE ACTIVITES This test is to be performed after the activation of the FOS Ion gauge programs (FOS050/051 - Prop ID 2164). That program must show an ion gauge reading of 0.00001 Torr or less within 24 hours of HV turn-on. HRS pressure gauge reading of the same value is also acceptable. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS Prior and during this test, the standard configuration for FOS operations will be with the high voltage turned off. All reconfigurations of the FOS except for those specified within this test should leave the high voltage setting at zero volts. After this test has been successfully completed, FOS reconfigurations may configure the side which has been tested herein to the nominal high voltage setting. It is permissible to schedule FOS observations on a success oriented basis (i.e. assume that this test is successful and that subsequent observations may be made with high voltage set to the nominal value). If this test fails, the instrument will be placed in the Safe configuration until the schedule has been purged of all FOS observations which require high voltage. All of the high voltage settings within this test are preplanned and should be part of the onboard command load. Each step of the test will be enabled in real- time (using line 1) if and only if the preceeding step was satisfactory. If the real-time interaction does not occur either because the command link was lost or the previous step was unsatisfactory, the command load should place the FOS in the SAFE state. The SIEVENT (?) PSTOL procedure will be used to set the appropriate FOS event flag if the test is to continue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. At OSS, the data will be presented as total counts per channel, printed out and examined for any evidence of corona emission (large number of counts across several channels). It is also desireable that the data be presented as a graph of counts vs. channel and printed in that form. Output will be retained by the FOS OV team for comparison with later orbits and other HV steps, as well as for studies of long-term background counts trends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
