Abstract We have discovered that the POLARIZED FLUX (scattered light) spectra of NGC1068 and other Seyfert 2 nuclei look like the FLUX spectra of Seyfert 1 nuclei. This implies that these objects would appear as Seyfert 1's if viewed from another direction, so the distinction between the two classes could be a largely an orientation effect. (The polarization position angles of Seyfert 2's are always perpendicular to the radio source axes. This scattering geometry indicates that the Seyfert 2's would appear as Seyfert 1's if viewed along the radio jet axis.) We need to find out whether or not the polarized flux spectra of Seyfert 2's are really INDISTINGUISHABLE from the flux spectra of Seyfert 1's by looking for the high excitation lines, the Fe II, and the continuum shape in the UV. We also need to measure the wavelength-dependence of continuum polarization in the UV to determine the nature of the scatterers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. We plan four spectropolarimetry scans of NGC1068. First we use FOS/BL, G270H, and the 0.3" aperture for a brief integ; then a brief integ. with 1.0". Next we do a long integ. with the 4.3" aperture for good SNR. Finally we do a long integ. with the 4.3" aperture and the G190H grating. All exposures use the B waveplate and 4 position angles. The nucleus is burned out on the GSSS plate, and spatially resolved on the GTO images. The position specified is from I Evans, based on the GTO/SAO optical continuum image. Based on the acquisition experience of the FOS GTO team, George Hartig tells us we can acquire succesfully with a Binary Search followed by a fine Peak-Up. He advises us to use a FAINT limit of 33000 and a BRIGHT limit of 720000, and 66 sec total integ for the B.S. For Peak-Up he advises 10 sec per pointing, and first a 3x3 with the 0.3" aperture, covering 0.4" at 0.2" spacing; this is to be followed by a 4x4 stage with the same aperture, using 0.06" spacing.
