Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID SV/FOS Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Richard Harms APPLIED RESEARCH CORP USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract PHASE IV B The goal is to measure the aperture locations and sizes in 4 phases as described in detail in "Aperture Locations and Sizes for the Space Telescope Science Instruments" by O. Lupie, R. Bohlin, and A. Holm. This program has the highest priority. Phases I to III must be completed before attempting observations of any other stellar targets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Scientific Justification. See Abstract. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Since the FOS apertures are nested about the same position on the photocathode, an accurate plate scale and orientation cannot be derived as for the other instruments with widely separated apertures, as projected on the photocathodes. Therefore, the precise FOS place scale and orientation will be determined as follows: Perform a raster step and dwell sequence in the 4.3 arcsec aperture, using a 1 arcsec step size on a 4x4 arcsec grid. The edges of the 4.3 arcsec aperture should be avoided to prevent vignetting effects. An aperture map is required at each step in the dwell sequence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Mode I real-time data will be used to monitor the start of the stellar observations. The FGS encoder values are to be extracted and recorded during the step and dwell sequences. OV/SV Prerequisites: Proposal 1443 at least 7 days prior to this test. The observations in this proposal (1528) need to be completed at least 7 days prior to the secnd visit in proposal 2195. Minimum/Delta plan objects: All observations are SV minimum plan. The dwell times on the Spatial Scan Form are determined as follows: ...SI Overhead: Dump UDL log 30s ..................BEG/END ACQ 15s ...Exposure time: 20s (R), 45s (B) ...Slew time: 10s The center point in the spatial scan should have the object centered in the aperture. Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture used (4.3") - 0.43" - is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, using FOS IDT Computer hardware. The results of this aperture location calibration are relevant to the project data base, so that the priority is very high. Data from Phases I - III must be reduced before any other observations using stellar targets can be attempted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
