Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID OV Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Prof. Robert C. Bless UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA (608) 262-1715 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Using a standard star (V ~ 12 mag.) in the open cluster NGC 188, the coarse location of the acquisition aperture with respect to the FGS reference frame will be determined and the initial plate scale and orientation of the detector coordinate system with respect to the V2V3 reference frame will be verified. Successful completion of this second phase of the Mission Support Calibration (MSC) procedure will verify Mode III target acquisition. The desired goal for this phase is to locate the center of the target acquisition aperture with an uncertainty not to exceed 0.5 arcsec. It is preceded by the Phase I, HSP-01a. This test will supply aperture positions to the flight data base. Note: This is RPSS file 1503. Revision history: Richards 4/13/88, Slovak 5/20/88, Richards 6/29/88. GENERAL FORM Proposal 1503c PI: Prof. Robert C. Bless Proposal Title: HSP-01B: MSC/0V COARSE FGS/HSP ALIGNMENT (PHASE II) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mr. Evan E. Richards UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA Dr. Joseph F. Dolan GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA Prof. Robert C. Bless UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. The justification for this procedure is to establish a coarse location of the acquisition apertures with respect to the FGS reference frame and thus with the V2V3 vehicle reference frame, and to verify the initial estimate of the plate scale and orientation of the detector coordinate system with respect to the V2V3 reference system. Successful completion of this phase of the Mission Support Calibration (MSC) procedure will also verify Mode III target acquistion. The centers of the target acquisition apertures will be located with an uncertainty not to exceed 0.5 arcsec. The centers of the target acquisition apertures must be accurately determined in order to allow offsets to be calculated for placing a selected taget into a desired science aperture. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The observations will begin with the visual IDT (IDT#3) configured in the image mode and proceed as follows: 1) Mode III target acquisition to position the star NGC 188-49 in the finding aperture (10 arcsec); 2) WAIT for three orbits for the HSP temperature to stabilize at this beta angle; the thermal environment must be as stable as possible during this test. 3) Have the telescope execute a coarse step and dwell grid centered on the initial pointing of the telescope. The step size should be equal to 2.0 arcsec and the grid should be four steps wide and long (sixteen points), which will assure that the target is seen at least twice in the aperture maps taken at each dwell. At each step, obtain an aperture map and record the FGS star selector encoder readings for each of the guide stars. The aperture maps should be 20x20 in size with 0.5 arcsec steps, integrating for ten (10) milliseconds at each point for a total for four seconds per map. 4) Repeat steps 2-3 for IDT#2(UV1) and IDT#4(UV2). 5) Repeat steps 2-3 for IDT#1(POL) except make the following change to accomodate the smaller (6.1 arcsec) acquisition aperture: in step 2, the coarse step size should be reduced to 1.0 arcsec. 6) IMMEDIATELY, before the HSP temperature has a chance to change, point to the bright earth and perform a subset of the scans included in Phase I; this will tie together the aperture positions at the temperature encountered in Phase II with the temperature encountered in Phase I; if those temperatures are sufficiently different, a calibration of the "banana mode", or movement in the focal plane of the aperture positions as a function of temperture, can be made. These scans consist of 12 X 80 pixel area scans of three filter strips on the VIS tube (F160LP, F551W, and F620W), using 0.4 arcsec steps, and 20 X 20 pixel area scans of each of the two 1.0 arcsecond science apertures on those strips, using 0.1 arcsec steps. Both 10msec and 100msec sample times are used. There are also scans of two filter strips on each of the UV tubes and one aperture on each of the filter strips One filter strip and one aperture are scanned on the POL tube. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The prerequisites for this test are HSP tests iA through iG, 01, and 01a and that the FGS to FGS alignment be done to an accuracy of 0.10 arcsec. The prerequisite to that test is a successful mini-OFAD. This test can be done in FGS Coarse Track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction consists of deriving the count rates (or flux) for all the apertures on each IDT and associating these values with the appropriate step and dwell grid point coordinates. These data are displayed as an intensity versus position plot. In the data analysis, the locations of the target star with respect to the deflection coordinate system is derived using an intensity centroiding algorithm. A coarse plate scale is calculated using the magnitudes of the separations of the stellar positions in deflection units and in V2V3 units (arcsec). The position angle between the V2V3 axes and the detector coordinate system is also determined. The aperture centers are then derived in V2V3 coordinates. Finally, the V2V3 coordinates for the remaining apertures are calculated from the above results. These coordinates will be supplied to the flight data base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported at the Space Astronomy Lab at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
