Abstract This test proves the ability to turn on the high voltage power supplies, and collects noise data to verify the nominal operation of the power supplies. Data are collected at the minimum tube voltage and at voltages corresponding to tube gains of 500,000, 1,000,000 and 2,000,000. Note: This is RPSS file 1502. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ E. E. Richards UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA J. W. Percival UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA Robert C. Bless UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. The justification for this test is to verify that high voltage can successfully be turned on for the various detectors and that the instrument operates properly with high voltage on. This verification is necessary before the instrument can be used for actual observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. This is an internal test and requires no external objects. The test is performed by executing the following steps: 1) Make the oldhold-to-newhold transition; High Volts are off. 2) Set up detector 1 (POL) for a 192-sec data collection of dark. (Sample at deflection coordinates of (H,V) = (2000,1900). 3) Begin the data collection. 4) After 77 seconds into data collection, turn on HVPS1 with a program value of 0 (minimum voltage). 5) After 115 seconds into data collection, turn off HVPS1. 6) Make the newhold-to-oldhold transition. 7) Wait 24 hours to check over the data. 8) Take a normal, 192-sec data collection of dark at a HVPS setting corresponding to a gain of 500,000. (Sample at deflection coordinates of (H,V) = (2000,1900). 9) Repeat steps 1 through 6 for detectors 2, 3, 4, and 5 (UV1, VIS, UV2, and PMT). Note that for detector 5 (PMT) the telescope must be pointing at the dark earth. 10) Wait 24 hours to check over the data. 11) Using detector 1 (POL), repeat step 8 at a HVPS setting corresponding to a gain of 1,000,000. (Sample at deflection coordinates of (H,V) = (2000,1900). 12) Repeat step 8 for UV1, VIS, UV2, and PMT (#2 - #5). Note that for detector 5 (PMT) the telescope must be pointing at the dark earth. 13) Wait 24 hours to check over the data. 14) Using detector 1 (POL), repeat step 8 at a HVPS setting corresponding to a gain of 2,000,000. (Sample at deflection coordinates of (H,V) = (2000,1900). 15) Repeat step 11 for UV1, VIS, UV2, and PMT (#2 - #5). Note that for detector 5 (PMT) the telescope must be pointing at the dark earth. 16) Wait 24 hours to check over the data. 17) Repeat step 14 for UV1, VIS, UV2, and PMT (#1 - #5). Note that for 18) detector 5 (PMT) the telescope must be pointing at the dark earth. Also note that now is the point in time when the test HSP-i1, Detector Dark Count, may be done. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. This test may be performed in real-time or by stored command sequence. Every time a new voltage is tried for the first time on the first tube (POL), there must be a 24 hour wait so that system data can be analyzed before the next part of the test is performed. HSP tests iA through iE must be complete before this test is begun. Special requirements for this test are: 1) The ST must not be pointed at the sun, moon or bright earth during this test. If the bright earth is visible during the orbit, then the test should be performed during the dark part of the orbit. 2) The aft shroud pressure must be less than one millionth torr. 3) High voltage setting should be selected so that tube gains of 2,000,000 are not exceeded. 4) A 24 hour wait must be inserted after the first time the first detector (POL) is turned up to each voltage setting. This will give us time to analyze each test, and to decide whether to continue with the test for the remaining dectectors. 5) The ST bright object protection processor must be enabled and the ST SSM PIT bright object flags operational. 6) Non SAA passage is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will consist of analyzing engineering telemetry data to verify nominal response after turning on the high voltage. Also, the single color photometry data from each detector will be examined to ensure that nominal dark count rates exist for that detector with high voltage on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis for this test will be supported at the University of Wisconsin Space Astronomy Laboratory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. No special ground system requirements are anticipated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11. Address Information Name: ROBERT C.
