This activity is a required step in the determination of the alignment and calibration parameters necessary for the proper processing of attitude sensor data in the onboard Pointing Control Systems and in the ground PASS attitude determination software. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Each of the 90 degree slew maneuvers required in performing this calibration will cause the generation of an autonomous delayed FHST 3-axis attitude update. In the following description, positive roll, pitch, and yaw are defined as positive rotations. (right-hand coordinate system) around the +V1, +V2, and +V3 axes, respectively. RGA data is required from the start of the FHST data, or FHST plus FGS data, taken preceding a maneuver, during the maneuver, and through the data take following a maneuver. The uninterrupted sequence of observations consisting of FHST/FGS observations before and after a maneuver, as well as during the large angle maneuver, constitute a basic scheduling unit. The RGA data takes during any of the 90D maneuvers specified do not have to be interrupted because of occultations or SAA passages. However, the FGS and/or FHST data takes that follow the maneuver should be initiated immediately upon completion of any of these maneuvers, and the maneuver should commence immediately upon completion of the FGS and/or FHST data takes that precede the maneuver. Real-time downlinks are preferred for all data takes; however, data takes must be backed up to the ETR. The maneuvers described in this proposal are in two groups. After the first group of maneuvers is performed, the PASS shall require six hours to process the data. The FGS/RGA scale-factor-alignment matrices are then uplinked. A second group of maneuvers is then performed. The results of the processing of the data obtained from the second group of maneuvers will be available on the PASS data bases six hours after the receipt of the data associated with all the maneuvers in the second group. The maneuvers in each group are described in the following paragraphs. No preferred sequence of performing the maneuvers within either group is required. The maneuvers within the first group are described as follows. The HST will be maneuvered to point the -V1 axis toward the sun, and the +V3 axis at the North Ecliptic Pole. After obtaining data from at least two simultaneously unocculted FHSTs for at least five minutes, the HST will be rolled +90D. Data from at least two simultaneously unocculted FHSTs will be taken for at least five minutes immediately after the end of this maneuver. Each of the four remaining maneuvers is performed by maneuvering between two of the following targets: Target 1 is the first ecliptic field west of the anti-sun; Target 2 is the ecliptic field approximately 90 degrees west of Target 1; Target 3 is the North Ecliptic Pole field. The required maneuvers are: (1) a -90D pitch from Target 1 to Target 2; (2) a +90D yaw from Target 2 to Target 3 ; (3) a -90D yaw from Target 3 to Target 2; and (4) a +90D pitch from Target 2 to Target 1. Immediately preceding and immediately following each of the 90D maneuvers described, the FGSs should acquire guide stars for the appropriate field and observe the guide stars for a minimum of three minutes. Data from at least one unocculted FHST must be taken in parallel with the FGS guide star data acquired immediately before and after each maneuver; however, data from more than one unocculted FHST is preferred. The maneuvers within the second group are described as follows. The requirements stated above for collecting RGA, FHST, and FHST and FGS data also pertain to the maneuvers in this group. Target 4 is defined to be the South Ecliptic Pole field. The required maneuvers are: (1) a - 90D pitch from Target 1 to Target 2 ; (2) a -90D yaw from Target 2 to Target 4 ; (3) a +90D yaw from Target 4 to Target 2 ; and (4) a +90D pitch from Target 2 to Target 1. (Simultaneous FGS data and FHST data are required before and after each of the preceding maneuvers.) For the fifth maneuver in this group, the HST +V1 axis is pointed to the anti-sun with the +V3 axis in the ecliptic plane and positioned west of the anti-sun. The HST is than rolled -90D (only FHST data are required before and after this maneuver). Based on studies the proposers have made of the geometrical patterns associated with the scheduling of this proposal, the observations as specified in the Exposure Logsheet may not be obtainable. Therefore, in order to obtain the best observational results, the following directives should be understood and followed. The basic sheduling unit should be maintained. However, geometrical considerations may not allow the FHST observations to be scheduled for all pitch and yaw maneuvers. Therefore, the positive and negative pitch and yaw maneuvers should be scheduled as follows. Either the positive or the negative maneuver should be scheduled according to the requirements of the basic scheduling unit. The opposite maneuver (i.e., the negative maneuver if the positive maneuver was scheduled as above, or the positive maneuver if the negative maneuver was scheduled as above) should be scheduled to provide the most star observations within the confines of the non- interruptable requirement. Acquiring the FGS data before and after the pitch and yaw maneuvers is mandatory. Preceding the first maneuver of the first group, the HST is maneuvered so that the +V3 axis is in the ecliptic plane west of the anti- sun, and the +V1 axis is pointed at the ecliptic field whose RA is less than or equal to the RA of the anti-sun. Once at this position, the FGS should acquire guide stars. FGS guide star data and RGA data are to be collected for one orbit. The PASS will compute RGA low mode drift rates based on FGS attitudes with these data. The results should be available on the PASS data bases 4.5 hours after the completion of the data take. N/A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Real-time downlinks are preferred for all data takes; however, all data takes must be backed up to the ETR. The telemetry format should be the PN (32 kbps) format starting and ending with the guide star or FHST data obtained before and after each maneuver. The format for the FGS/RGA low mode drift rate should be PN (32 kbps). At other times the telemetry format should be the AN (4 kbps) format. This proposal specifically requests an ETR dump following each maneuver group. The proposers anticipate that more frequent ETR dumps will be performed within each group according to the ETR dump policy developed for orbital verification. Additional comments or special requests. Prior to this activity, Bootstrap Phase A (Proposal #1539) must be completed. Bootstrap Phase A should result in the ability to achieve FGS Fine Lock with 2/3 aperture.
