Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Richard Harms APPLIED RESEARCH CORPORATION USA (301) 459-8442 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract The goal is to measure the aperture location and sizes in 4 phases as described in detail in "Aperture Locations and Sizes for the Space Telescope Science Instruments" by O. Lupie, R. Bohlin, and A. Holm. This program has the highest priority. Phases I to III must be completed before attempting observations of any other stellar targets. This program will result in a data base change to the table of aperture locations. Revised 9/15/89 to match Implementation Plan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 1443c PI: Richard Harms Proposal Title: FOS-OV 100/101 APERTURE LOCATION - PHASE IIIA 4.3 POSITION IN V2V3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Scientific Justification. See abstract. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Phase IIIa of Aperture Locations will provide a fine measure of the edges of the 4.3 arcsec acquisition aperture in V2V3 coordinates. If fine aperture maps are obtained at each pointing, the program will also produce a measure of the distortion that the edge of the aperture causes in apparent location of a star. The much more efficient mode of just recording the total counts at each pointing will define the edge position to be where the count rate falls to one half of the maximum. Four linear scan sequences perpendicular to the edge and centered on each edge are performed for the 4.3 arcsec aperture. The scan length is 0.5 arcsec and the step size should be 0.03 arcsec. The program begins with a TALED aperture map to determine the current location of the aperture in detector coordinates, to verify our ability to position a star at the center of the aperture, and to optimize the detector Y-BASE values during the edge step and dwell sequence. The value for the Y parameter is based on ground data. These values will need to be updated based on in-orbit y-bases measured from data in proposal 2188, which is performed at least 8 days prior to this program, or set Y -OFFSET=+/-384. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Schedule this proposal 4D +/- 1D after completion of 1442, FOS-OV 90/91, Aperture Location Phase II. Spatial scans are specified in spacecraft/aperture coordinates. The dwell times on the Spatial Scan Forms are determined as follows: ....SI overhead: .............dump UDL log 30 seconds .............issue BEG ACQ/END ACQ 15 seconds ....Exposure time: 4 seconds ....Slew Time: 10 seconds Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture (4.3") used - 0.43" - is required. Proposal 2748 - SAA dark measurements, must occur at least 4 days prior to this program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, using FOS IDT computer hardware. The results of this aperture location calibration are relevant to the project data base, so that the priority is very high. Data from Phases I - III must be reduced before any other observations using stellar targets can be attempted.
