Abstract PHASE II The goal is to measure the aperture location and sizes in 4 phases as described in detail in "Aperture Locations and Sizes for the Space Telescope Science Instruments" by O. Lupie, R. Bohlin and A. Holm. This program has the highest priority. Phases I to III must be completed before attempting observations of any other stellar targets. This program will result in a data base change to the table of aperture locations. Revised by S. Falgout at the direction of L. Nagel to match the Implemen- tation Plan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Scientific Justification. See abstract. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Phase II of Aperture Locations will provide the coarse V2 V3 location of the 4.3 arcsec acquisition aperture, a coarse plate scale, and the coarse orientation of the Digicons about the V1 axis. The technique is to move a star on a 12 x 12 arcsec grid in 3 arcsec steps. An aperture map will be taken at each step in the grid. The step size insures that at least 1-4 of the aperture maps will have the star present, if the center of the grid is close enough to the actual position. An aperture map of the FOS TALED should precede the grid step and dwell. These observations should result in our knowledge of the aperture location to within 0.3". If the star does not appear on any point of the grid, repeat using a 20 x 20 arcsec grid and 3 arcsec steps. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. SV Prerequisites: Fine Y-base measurements (Prop. 2188) performed at least 4 days prior to this test. Spatial scans are in spacecraft/aperture coordinates. The dwell times on the Spatial Scan Form are determined as follows: SI Overhead: .....Dump UDL log 30s .....BEG/END ACQ 15s .....Exposure Time: 20s (R), 45s (B) .....Slew Time: 15s Record the FGS encoder values at each dwell point in the spatial scan. Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture used (4.3") - 0.43" - is required. All observations in this program MUST occur in non-SAA impacted orbits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, using FOS IDT computer hardware. The results of this aperture location calibration are relevant to the project data base, so that the priority is very high. Data from Phases I - III must be reduced before any other observations using stellar targets can be attempted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
