Scientific Justification. See Abstract. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Phase 1 of Aperture Locations will provide the location of the aperture in detector coordinates from observations of a flat field source that uniformly fills the apertures. The brightness of the source must be appropriate for the FOS camera MIRROR. The mean sizes of the FOS apertures are also determined from the relative throughput as long as the flat field source is constant over the time between aperture maps. Aperture maps of the TALEDs and an elliptical galaxy with a flat energy distribution in the nucleus will be used. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Updated coordinates, in the guide star reference frame, will be provided as quickly as available. Schedule this proposal at least 4D AFTER proposal 1442, FOS -OV 090/091, Phase II Aperture Calibration (the aperture locations must be updated). This proposal must be completed at least 4 days prior to proposal 1444, FOS-OV 110/111. This program can be done in coarse track. The TA-LED and external maps of any specific aperture must be obtained NON-INT due to the floppy nature of the filter- grating wheel. The overlight limit must be set to the default value for non-mirror observations (80 million), even though the MIRROR is used. All observations in this program MUST occur in non-SAA impacted orbits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at ST ScI, using FOS IDT computer hardware. The results of this aperture location calibration are relevant to the project data base, so that the priority is very high.
