Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone William H. Jefferys UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS USA 512-471-4461 X PROFESSOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract The goal of this procedure is to empirically determine the "S-curve" for each interferometer, using "known single" stars, and to look for systematic effects by measuring double stars with known characteristics. These S-curve determinations will go into the Calibration Data Base for deconvolution studies, and for monitoring long -term changes in the FGS behavior. The positions of these "single" stars will also be measured in POS mode to determine any systematic offset in the position determined by the FGE and by a Transfer Function Scan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 1416c PI: William H. Jefferys Proposal Title: VERIFY AND CALIBRATE TRANSFER FUNCTION AST-SV-5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ast Science Team ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. One of the astrometric uses of the FGSs is to measure double star parameters. These measurements require an accurate knowledge of the Transfer Function of the Interferometer. An empirical TF from ground-based measurements is known for each Koester Prism/PMT system. However, realignment of the optical system on orbit, coupled with outgassing and changing PMT characteristics, leads to the requirement to observe the TF directly on real "single" stars and known multiple systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Minimum Plan: steps 1-8 and 10, repeat steps 1-5 every 20 days. Delta Plan: step 9 (NOTE:FGS1 observations are Delta Plan). 1) Acquire G.S. in FGSs 1 and 3 for single early type star. 2) Set appropriate filter. Command FGS 2 to Coarse Track, TF. Locate centroid of star. (ACQ-MODE=SEARCH in TRANS). Backoff 1/2 scan length. Ramp up to scan rate. Take data for scan length/scan rate. Ramp down to zero. Repeat scan for a total of 5 observations. 3) Go to the single star with FGS astrometer. 4) Lock on in POS mode. 5) Take data for 1 minute. 6) Repeat steps 2- 5 with 2nd filter, if appropriate. 7) Reposition ST so TF star isin FGS3. 8) Repeat steps 1-6 for FGS 3 as astrometer. 9) Repeat steps 1-6 for FGS 1 as astrometer. 10) Repeat steps 1-8 for 1 late type single star, 1 Bright Binary, and 1 faint binary with appropriate filters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The two single stars and two doubles must be selected depending on availability. Multiple Faint Binary and Bright Binary pairs are provided. For all scans the position angle will be the default for the periods in which the observations are scheduled. The scan directions for the single stars are immaterial. For the binary targets, the normal orientation of the HST will determine which targets are suitable for observations. Scans are expected at the default 45 degrees from the X-Y axes. SV MINIMUM PLAN: LINES 101-102,104-105,107-108,110,112, 131-134. SV DELTA PLAN: Lines 103,106,109,114-118 If the FGS-1 measurements observing the single star (lines 103,106--Delta Plan) are performed, they should be scheduled during the visits to the same target made for FGS-2 and FGS-3 observations (lines 101-102, 104-105 -- Minimum Plan). The targets are chosen for an SV window to accomodate a December Launch. For a significantly different date (3 months), a differnt set of targets must be USED. The Position Angles provided on the Scan Parameters Form are given in S/C coordinates in all cases. To reduce the effects of thermal jitter, care in selecting guide stars is essential. (1) The dominant guide star of each pair should be in FGS#3, and the roll star in FGS#1. (2) If possible, the dominant guide star should be chosen as close to FGS#2 as feasable (it is best if in the half of FGS#3 that is closest to FGS#2.) (3) The secondary guide star should be chosen so that the line between the two guide stars is as nearly parallel to the ST V2 axis as possible. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Lowell Observatory software modules of ADRS within SDAS will be used to derive separation plus magnitude data. The FORM of the "S-curve" will be generated and a "table look-up" routine will be "filled out" from the single star data. This information should reside in the PDB and the DB available to SDAS for TF analysis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. All FGS numbers refer to BAY numbers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). ADRS will be available in Austin. TF analysis software will be available at Lowell Observatory. Some AST personnel will be available to analyze data at STScI and/or GSFC during SV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. This test requires the operational capabilities verified in AST-OV-07. The results from this program will be used to calibrate all TRANS and TRANS/MOVING observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
