Abstract The goal of this procedure is to measure the plate scale of the FGSs to 0.002 arcsec over the length of the FGSFOV by measuring a minor planet as it traverses the FGSFOV. The derived numbers will go into the Calibration ST ScI database for SDAS reductions of individual FGS astrometric observations. A composite number, as yet TDB, will go into the Project database to replace the preliminary value of the OTA Plate Scale derived from the mini-OFAD. Scientific Justification. The conversion from instrumental units to arcseconds on the sky is commonly referred to as "plate scale." The FGSs are supposed to have the capability to measure relative positions within the FGSFOV to an accuracy of +/-0.002 arcseconds. This is an order of magnitude better than ground-based observations, and so the plate scale must be determined in a manner other than measuring a "known" field. The short arc ephemeris motion of a well-studied solar system object such as an asteroid can be known to an order of magnitude higher accuracy. Therefore, the plan to calibrate the FGS scales is to measure a minor planet as it moves across the FGSFOVs, and determine the plate scales of each FGS in turn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Combined AST and STScI SVMP: MTPlate Scale in FGS1 and 3. Set all FGS filters to PUPIL for Astrometry measurements. 1) Point HST so that the moving target is near one extreme of the FGS FOV for FGS 1 or 3 and the spacecraft is oriented so that the direction of motion of the moving target is approximately along the long dimension of the FOV. 2) Acquire Guide Stars in FGS 1 and 3. 3) Acquire the moving target in POS mode. 4) Take data for 3 minutes. 5) Measure a reference star for 1 minute. 6) Interleave reference star and moving target measures. 7) Repeat steps 1-6 for another rotation of ref stars. 8) Repeat steps 1-7 for the other FGS (1 or 3). If the clear aperture in FGS 1 or 3 is deemed suitable for POS mode, then the PUPIL will be changed to F583W in that FGS. The decision will be made after 5POL in Nov. 1991. All repeats of a moving target as it traverses a given FGS FOV should be made with the same POS and ORIENT. Other observations may be made between these settings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Moving target in a particular orientation with requirements on the position of measurement within the FGSFOVs for all FGSs requires time criticality. The BEFORE and AFTER Special Requirements are needed for moving target/reference field observations. The rate of motion of the minor planet must be determined from ground calibrations. The correction from center of light to center of mass must be accounted for, either by making the measurements at the same point in the light curve (determined by concurrent ground-based photometry) or by undertaking a program to determine the aspect of the minor planet as a function of time during the observations, or both. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. AST software will be used to derive the positions of the minor planet as a function of time. These will be compared with the expected ephemeris motion derived at the University of Texas, corrected for the usual known observational effects. The undistorted plate scale will then be derived for each FGS with an accuracy of 0.002 arcseconds over a major portion of the FGSFOVs. These numbers, their attendant errors, and the covariance matrix of the solution will be entered in the Project Data Base and the STScI data base to be used with SDAS analysis.
