Scientific Justification. Astrometric observations of objects embedded in nebulosity and near bright stars are of great interest. A significant fraction of the GTO observations will be made of such objects. The ability of the FGSs to make such observations must be verified. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. 1) Acquire guide stars and position HST so the target stars fall in FGS 3 FOV. Star Neb1-2 should be at X=Y=O. 2) Scan three "nebular stars" with F583W filter with FGS 3 as astrometer. 3) Repeat step 2 with the F550W and F605W filters. 4) Wait 30D to validate POS mode K-factors then measure three "nebular stars" with F583W filter for FGS 3 as astrometer. 5) Measure the three stars with the F550W and F605W filters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The Orion (field 1) and Trifid (field 2) nebulae are available at 1/2 year intervals: Orion from June 22 - December 21, Trifid from December 22 to June 21. Use Orion if possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The combined FGS data will be analyzed for continuity, outliers, statistical distribution, and positional stability. In addition, consistancy will be checked against the relative magnitudes and positions from ground based measurements. The ADRS system within SDAS will be used to analyze the data. No values to be included in the calibration data base will be generated by this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
