Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for calibrating the internal orientation of the four (4) polarizers in the polarimetric IDT (POL, IDT#1) on the HSP. Three (3) polarization standards will be observed in various filter-polarizer combinations in order to derive internal position angles. The correction factors are then determined which permit internal position angles to be transformed to absolute position angles in the astronomical equatorial coordinate system. Description of proposed observations. The proposed observations will use the polarimetric IDT ( POL, IDT#1) configured in the digital, single aperture mode. The observations follow the sequences outlined below: 1) Acquire the desired polarization standard in the finding aperture of IDT#1 (POL). Offset the star to the filter-polarizer position pair (F327M, E = 0d) and integrate for thirty (30) seconds. Repeat the observation for the three other polarizer positions with the same filter in the order (E = 90d, 45d, and 135d). Repeat the integration sequence two more times. 2) Repeat the first sequence (1) of integrations with the F237M filter. 3) Repeat the first sequence (1) of integrations with the F277M filter 4) Repeat the first sequence (1) of integrations with the F216M filter. 5) Repeat the first through fourth (1- 4) sequence for a second polarization standard. 6) Repeat the first through fourth (1-4) sequence for a third polarization standard. Since the observations of different stars may be spread over time, targets in the CVZ are preferred. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. No real-time observations or special scheduling requirements are requested. Prerequisites: Schedule this proposal seven or more days after successful completion of proposal 1381, HSP Mode II Target Acquisition HSP-02. Pointing Stability: Coarse track is understood to have less than 19 marcsec stability. That is satisfactory for observations using the 10" and 1.0" UV1, UV2, and VIS apertures, the PMT, and the 6.0" (finding) aperture on the POL IDT. HSP requires fine lock only for observations in the 0.65" apertures on the POL IDT and in the 0.4" apertures. (If coarse track is good to 19 marcsec.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. No special calibrations, dark time, or uninterupted exposures are anticipated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction consists of deriving the count rates through each filter- polarizer combination, corrected using the scale factors derived in HSP-07, for each polarization standard observed. The percent polarization and internal position angles are derived from the corrected count rates using standard polarimetric equations. These data are then compared with the cataloged values to derive the corrections to apply to the internal position angles to transform them to the equatorial coordinate system. The position angle transformation values will be supplied to the Calibration Data Base (CDB). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
