Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID SV/HSP Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Robert C. Bless UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA 608-262-1715 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for verifying the dynamic range, limiting magnitude, linearity and digital-to-analog relatability and overlap of the visual IDT (IDT#3) on HSP. Eleven (11) photometric standards will be observed in the analog and/or digital, single and/or star-sky modes of observing, which span a large range in brightness (5 < v < 21 mag.). The test serves to verify the relevant CEI specifications and permits a verification of the deadtime corrections in the digital operating mode. Stars of fifth to sixth magnitude range are saved for the last observation in case the brightness of these stars causes a data overflow problem. Note: This proposal requires different sample times for star and sky samples which are not supported by the current instructions. The required sky sample times are noted in comment statements. GENERAL FORM Proposal 1385c PI: Robert C. Bless Proposal Title: HSP PHOTOMETRIC PERFORMANCE TEST HSP-06A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ M. H. Slovak UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA Pi R. C. Bless UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA J. F. Dolan GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The observations will be obtained with the visual IDT (IDT#3) configured in both the digital and analog, single and star-sky modes. Eleven (11) photometric standard stars will be observed with several stars in the range 6 < V < 10 mag., in common with both observing modes. The first star is acquired in the 10 arcsec finding aperture of IDT#3 (VIS). The star is then positioned to a selected 1.0 arcsec aperture (F551W). If the star is between 6 < V < 10 mag., the IDT is configured in the analog and digital star-sky mode (i.e. DATA-FORMAT=ALL) with sky background obtained through the 1.0 arcsec aperture and an integration is performed. For stars fainter than tenth magnitude, the IDT is used only in the digital star-sky mode and sky background is obtained through the 1.0 arcsec aperture. This test should be completed in a one week period. Stars in the fifth to sixth magnitude range are done as the last sequence in case their brightness causes a data overflow or blooming problem in the IDT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Real time acquisition of faint stars (V > 18 mag.) is anticipated to be necessary. The faintest targets should be observed in orbits which avoid the South Atlantic Anomoly (SAA) to reduce noise bursts in the data stream. Schedule this proposal 7D OR MORE AFTER SV/HSP 1381, HSP Mode II acquisition test HSP-02. Schedule this proposal BEFORE SV/HSP 1474, HSP-06B. Pointing Stability: Coarse track is understood to have less than 19 marcsec stability. That is satisfactory for all observations in the 10" and 1.0" UV1, UV2, and VIS IDT apertures, the PMT, and the 6.0" (finding) POL IDT aperture. HSP requires fine lock for all observations in the 0.65" POL IDT aperture and in all the 0.4" apertures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. No special calibrations, dark time, or uninterupted exposures are requested. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction consists of deriving instrumental count rates, correcting for sky background and deadtime losses (in the digital data). Instrumental magnitudes are then calculated and transformed to the Johnson V standard photometric system. In data analysis, the transformed V magnitudes are compared to the ground-based values and a weighted least squares fit is performed to determine deviations from linearity, dynamic range, and relatability of analog versus digital observations. Deadtime corrections will be compared with results from ground-based testing and supplied to the Calibration Data Base (CDB). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. No supporting or coordinated observations with other facilites are anticipated. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported on two computer facilities at the University of Wisconsin in Madison: a) A VAX 11/780 computer under the VMS operating system with extensive applications software. b) A microVAX cluster under the ULTRIX operating system Both the computer facilities support the FITS tape standard and thus can readily access the ST-FITS data export products. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
