Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for verifying the capability for HSP to continuously integrate at a very high data sampling rate. Using the visual IDT (IDT#3) the Crab Pulsar will be observed in a selected 1.0 arcsec aperture using 10.8 microsecond integration samples. This observation will verify the time resolution of the HSP and determine the HST system time reliability of scientific purposes. Observations of the Crab Pulsar at a 10.8 micosecond sampling rate will also verify the relevant Contract End Item (CEI) specification for the HSP. GENERAL FORM Proposal 1383c PI: Robert C. Bless Proposal Title: HSP TIME RESOLVED PHOTOMETRY TEST HSP-04 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Slovak UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA J. F. Dolan GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The Crab Pulsar will be observed using the visual IDT (IDT#3) on the HSP, configured in the digital, single aperture mode. It will be acquired in real- time (Mode I Target Acquisition) in the 10 arcsec aperture and offset to the F400LP 1.0 arcsec aperture. Using a 10.8 microsecond integration time, at least 30 minutes of continuous data per orbit will be collected for four (4) orbits which are scheduled for full TDRSS support, if possible. If full TDRSS support is not possible, then STR may be used for a portion of the observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Line 1 performs an INTERACTIVE ACQUISITION for the exposure in Line 2. The S/C maneuver calculated for this INT ACQ MUST be retained and reuplinked at the start of each exposure in lines 3, 4 and 5. A REQ UPLINK has been added to lines 3,4,5 for this purpose. The SAME GUIDE STARS MUST BE USED FOR ALL OF LINES 1-5 to enable this "blind" offset SIP to work. In addition, we have forced the S/C orientation to remain the same for the observations by use of the SAME ORIENT special requirement. Prerequisites: Schedule this test seven or more days after successful completion of OV proposal 1504, HSP (Mode I) Target Acquisition Test, HSP-01C. Real time acquisition of the Crab Pulsar is required because of the faint nature of the object and confused field. The observation should also be scheduled for orbits which avoid passage through the South Atlantic Anomoly (SAA) in order to minimize high background levels which will induce deleterious phase jitter. It should also be scheduled for four (4) orbits over 4 days with full TDRSS support, if possible. If full TDRSS support is not possble, then STR may be used for a portion of the observations. POINTING STABILITY: Coarse track is understood to have less than 19 marcsec pointing stability. This is satisfactory for all observations in the 10" and the 1.0" UV1, UV2, and VIS IDT apertures, the PMT, and 6.0" (finding) POL IDT aperture. HSP requires fine lock for all observations in the 0.65" POL IDT apertures and in all the 0.4" apertures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction consists of converting the IDT counts into count rates and plotting the data set as a time series. The data analysis will consist of synchronous co-addition of the data stream using the target pulsar ephemeris. The resulting phase diagram will be examined for phase jitter or drift, indicating a loss of timing integrity or data dropout. The derived epoch of the phase diagram will then be related to the recorded UTC time to ascertain the HST time relatability. The derived transformation coefficients between UTC and HST onboard time will be supplied to the Calibration Data Base (CDB). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Coordinated ground based observations of the Crab pulsar would be desirable but are not essential. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported on two computer facilities at the University of Wisconsin in Madison: a) a VAX 11/780 computer under the VMS operating system with extensive applications software. b) a microVAX cluster under the ULTRIX operating system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
