This is a revised proposal submitted in November 1985 in response to reviews of the OV-SV programs held since the original June 1985 submission. The only significant change is the inclusion of observations of the spectral calibration lamps on the Exposure Logsheets. Revised April 1989 for SV scrub plan. retained only orbit with Doppler On Updated 8/24/89 to change repeat on line 6 to repeat obs of 10 exposures due to inability to reference repeat lines. Description of proposed observations. The star will be observed with Echelle A for one full orbit. Narrow interstellar lines in approximately 10 orders will be recorded. It will take 8 to 10 minutes to complete an observation of all of the lines. The complete set will be repeated 9 or 10 times. The Doppler processor will be active for the entire observation of the star. Observations of the on-board spectral calibration lamps will be made before and after those of the star. The purpose will be to monitor the stability of the wavelength calibration so that effects due to detector or spectrograph drifts can be distinguished from errors in the Doppler compensation process. If time permits, a scan of the same spectral region will be made with grating G140M. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. SV Prerequisties: HRS -05.2 Mode II Target Acquisition - Target Locate (Prop 1352) It is necessary for the the echelle exposures to span the full time of visibility for a full orbit in order to show the maximum doppler amplitudes. Guiding Tolerance: 0.015 arc seconds SV Minimum Plan: lines 1 - 8 SV Delta Plan: line 8.2,9 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We wish to verify both the phase and amplitude of the Doppler correction. It is necessary to observe the target for the equivalent of at least one full orbit of visibility to encounter the maximum velocity amplitude variation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Individual Observations will be overlayed and cross-correlated to measure any residual shifts. Presence of a sinusoidal shift would be a measure of the error in the Doppler compensation. If the test is successful - no shifts detected - no updates or changes will be made by any data base. If an error is found, it may be traceable to incorrect data base parameters - dispersion models etc. - which would have to be corrected and updated. The central depths of saturated absorption lines will be measured to characterize scattered light.
