Abstract This test features the measurement of one star, 16 Cyg B = HD 186427, with both spectrographs, in the range 1530-3230A. The goal of the test is to achieve S/N = 35 to 50A at 5A resolution. The star is an HST ultraviolet standard, and it is also a near-solar analog. The purpose of the test is to measure the amount of red leak into the ultraviolet region for an object with a color that is very similar to solar system objects. Description of proposed observations. The complete spectrum will be observed by the FOS with two grating settings: G270H (2 min), G190H (15 min) and G160L (3 min). The complete spectrum will be observed by the HRS as follows: G140L, 1 setting, 80 min.; G200M, 12 settings, 58 min; G270M, 23 settings, 18.6 min. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Scheduling comment from line 1: Since this star (HD186427) is an HST UV standard, it may have been visited before this test and exposure 1 may not be needed. SV Prerequisites: This test is to be performed after functional verification of target acquisitions in - FOS-02 COMBINED MODE II TARGET ACQUISITION (PROP 2195) HRS-05B MODE II TARGET LOCATE TAR ACQ (PROP 1352) and initial spectral calibration in - FOS-13 INTERNAL/EXTERNAL WAVELENGTH CAL (PROP 1317) HRS-10 INTERMEDIATE RESOLUTION CAL (PROP 1356) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data from the two spectrographs will be calibrated. For the HRS, the data will be binned to 5A resolution. The spectra will be plotted on the same scale. It is expected that the FOS will be systematically high because of the red leak, with the effect being much worse at shorter wavelengths, particularly below 2000A. Previous experience with OAO-2 and IUE data indicates that a wavelength- independent ("grey") correction may be sufficient to eliminate the red leak over much of the ultraviolet part of the FOS range. Such an approach will be tried with HST data first. If more sophisticated corrections are needed, these data will be used to determine the details. The worst case, that the data are not correctible, would still contain useful (but discouraging) information: that the HRS must be used for all ultraviolet spectra of red objects. This information is absolutely required to plan for planetary and late-type stellar spectra with the HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
