Dark measurements will be obtained using both detectors. The observations will be repeated as often as possible. Although the DARK measurements will be used to determine the average level of dark counts to subtract from the science data, the primary purpose of the SV (and OV) DARKs is to determine which FOS channels should be disabled. It is clear that all channels which exceed spec continually or intermittently should be turned off. Even though we have much information from ground-based tests, those data, taken at room temperature, may have listed as good channels which will be bad at operating temperatures. There may also be channels which are noisy on the ground that will be good under operating conditions. These channels could improve either because the temperature is lower or because the (intermittent) noise was due to interference from something in the environment which will not be present on orbit. For this reason, all channels should be enable for these DARK observations. Because of the intermittent nature of the noise in the channels (some bad channels showed up in only one or two of 10 or 20 darks), it is imperative to have as many DARKs as possible in SV. The parameters specified for the DARK exposures should result in the following values for FOS parameters: livetime = 0.500 deadtime = 0.010 ints = 40 patterns = 1 The photocathode will be sdampled at half-diode-height intervals over the YBASE range from -1472 to +1472, which encompasses all normal science image locations. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Observations are desired at high and low Geomagnetic latitudes. OV/SV prerequisites: completion of all OV activities If possible, schedule the exposures up to 90 minutes in length. Don't schedule the exposures for less than 30 minutes. Minimum/Delta Plan Designations: All DARK observations of minimum plan. For all DARK observations, ALL CHANNELS should be enabled. It is important to have as many of the DARKs done as early as possible, because the list of disabled diodes should be determined before any of the calibration exposures are taken. For example, any flat field with sub-stepping and overscan will be WRONG, in a manner that is not easily correctable, if a diode is turned off after the calibration exposures. As a secondary consideration, it may be possible to "fix" some bad diodes by varying the discriminator settings; clearly clearly this requires early and often DARKs. For this reason, the first 4 hours of DARKs on each side (lines 5.00-5.07 for the RED, lines 5.50-5.57 on the BLUE), must be scheduled early in SV. These 8 hours of DARKs must be completed at least 7 days prior to the external calibrations obtained in proposals 1315, 1317, 1318, 1319, 1320, and 1430. If it is possible to to schedule more than 8 hours of DARKs in early SV, please do so. However, no more than 20 hours of DARKs should be obtained. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. This test is not stray light sensitive. 40 hours of observation is internal dark measurements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, and the analysis will be performed using FOS IDT computer facilities. Although this is a calibration, no data will need to be added to the PODPS pipeline. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
