Abstract These exposures constitute the first epoch observations for an investigation of the motions perpendicuar to the plane of the Galaxy of stars lying within a cylinder centered on the sun having a radius of 10 kpc and a height of +/-5 kpc. All of the first epoch observations will be made in the parallel mode with the Wide Field or Planetary Camera in cases where the primary observation is at least as long as 45 minutes. This exposure time will enable us to obtain a 20 minute exposure in both the V and R passbands. We plan to repeat the observations after a time interval of five years, which should yield proper motions with an accuracy of 0.0002 "/yr, or 9.5 km/sec at a distance of 10 kpc. Since the local velocity dispersion perpendicular to the galatic plane is about 30 km/sec, we should be able to accurately study the z-motions of stars from the galactic center out to the outer edge of the Galaxy. The result of this analysis will be a determination of th mass density in the disk of the Galaxy over an area of about 3x10dex-8 pc2. Since the observations will extend to at least +/-5 kpc from the galactic plane, the velocity profiles should yield the complete mass distribution of the disk and may provide some information on the thick disk. The first epoch observations will be examined as they are taken to study the frequency distribution of multiple stars from the resolution of the ST to angular separations of about 2". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. All of the observations will be made in the parallel mode with the Wide Field or Planetary Camera, which ever happens to be in the ready state. The prime observations chosen to be parallel with are those with exposure times longer than 40 minutes and with odd latitudes less than +/-30d. The parallel exposure will be divided into one in the V passband and one in the R band so that it will be possible to obtain photometric parallaxes for each star. No priority or observing phase is given since they are defined by the primary observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Group based observations of the z-velocities of stars are confined to stars in the solar neighborhood within about 1 kpc of the sun. In this proposal we plan to extend these observations to the galactic center and to the edge of the visible galaxy. This is possible due to the very high accuracy of the proper motions that can be obtained with ST. Similar ground based accuracy can only be obtained by using time base lines of at least 40 years, assuming that the first epoch exposures are made with state of the art CCD detectors. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data will be analyzed by the STAT with the ADRS package at the team members' home institutions on existing computational facilities. The reference system to be adopted for the determination of the proper motions will be the faint galaxies and QSOs that happen to be on the individual frames. Since these fields are confined to low latitude regions, not all fields will have a sufficient number of galaxies to establish the zero point of the proper motions. In these latter cases the mean motion of the faintest blue stars with small motions will be assumed to represent a good approximation to a zero motion reference frame. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. First epoch paraller observations will be made of low latitude regions to determine the z-velocities of stars within a radius of 10 kpc and a height of at least +/-5 kpc above and below the plane. After the matching second epoch observations are made in 5 years it will be possible to determine z-velocities with an accuracy of +/-9.5 km/sec at a distance of 10 kpc. These data will be used to determine the mass desity in the plane of the disk from the galactic center to the edge of the visible galaxy. In addition, the exposures will be analyzed to determine the frequency distribution of binary star semi-major axes from the ST resolution limit to about 2".
