Scientific Justification. One of the most impressive capabilities of the HST is its ability to show us the morphological details of distant galaxies at significantly younger stages in their evolution. Studying these data is a statistical task since the range in morphology, both then and now, is very large. The parallel program described here is designed to provide statistical information on a large volume of the universe, making use of randomly chosen, high latitude fields. From these data, we plan to obtain counts of galaxies, information on the clustering properties of distant galaxies, and for those fields in which very long exposures are obtained, significant morphological information. The results will constrain theories of the formation and evolution of galaxies and large scale structure. The survey also has application to star counts and the structure of the halo and disk in our own Galaxy. It will provide homogeneous information on luminosity functions to faint levels and can be used to constrain the number of very low luminosity stars in the solar neighborhood. Short exposures (less than 20 minutes) in F555W and F785LP with the WFC will be used to measure the distribution of Galactic stars in magnitude ranges fainter than stars can be reliably separated from galaxies using ground-based telescopes. HST observations taken for 5 minutes using the PC (trailed under gyro-control) for the Quasar SnapShot Survey have shown the importance of obtaining reliable measurements of the star densities fainter than 19 mag (in V) and have led to a renormalization of the number density of Galactic spheroid stars. The spheroid main sequence for Galactic stars is fainter than V=~19 mag. The fields also offer an ideal selection of first epoch frames for future high latitude proper motion surveys. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. A set of sequences is constructed to fit within exposure opportunities of varying lengths, beginning with single orbit exposures. On long exposure opportunities, the aim is to obtain very deep images of galaxies by concentrating on the F785LP and F555W filters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This is a parallel program designed to increase the scientific productivity of the HST by acquiring data relevant for studying distant galaxies and the Galactic halo when the HST is busy but the WFPC is not. The exposure time is determined by the primary exposure time and the ability of the planning and scheduling system to match parallel exposures to primary exposures. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will undergo standard data reduction. Cosmic rays will be removed and multiple exposures in the same field will be stacked. The data will be visually inspected in the hopes of making serendipitous discoveries. Stars and galaxies will be identified and classified. Galaxy and star counts will be constructed and galaxy morphologies will be determined. Results will be applied to the formation and evolution of galaxies and to the structure of the Galactic halo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
