Abstract Images of Uranus in both strong (8890A) and weak (4870A) CH4 continuum (8500 and 5550A) images will be combined with FOS s (4000-8000A) of selected areas on Uranus to determine the ver of condensed and gaseous CH4 in the atmosphere of that planet inhomogeneous radiative transfer calculations will be require data, because the sources of opacity will certainly vary with ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ John J. Caldwell YORK UNIVERSITY CANADA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. When the capability for performing interactive acquisitions o is accomplished by the ST, these observations may be schedule practicable. The set will consist of four images, of which th used for interactive acquisition of the FOS aperture for the exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. ST observations are required for their ability to obtain high resolution both in imaging and spectroscopy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The only special scheduling requirement is for an interactive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. None recognized at this time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The images will be examined for contrast features suggestive patterns. Quantitative radiative transfer calculations will b test models of cloud particle vertical distribution, for thos planet where there is reason to believe that a quantitatively atmosphere is being observed at differing viewing angles--tha center and near the limb. The determination of such regions c after inspecting the images. For selected regions, spectra will provide much more informat CH(sub)4 bands will be observed, with widely varying strength discriminaiton will be enhanced significantly over what is po alone at a few wavelengths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. None ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). We have access to a dedicated SUN at York University. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Uranus will be imaged in strong (8890A) and weak (4870A) CH4 continua. These data will be combined with FOS spectra of fou to determine the vertical distribution of CH4 in the Uranian ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
