Abstract Uranus and Neptune will be observed with the FOS gratings G270H and G190H to provide spectra from 330 nm down to 180 nm, the lower limit being determined by the noise in the background scattered light within the FOS. Target acquisition will be accomplished through on-board ACQs of planetary satellites. The center of each planet will be targeted. Two apertures will be used, the 1.0 to get maximum throughput with reasonable spectral resolution, and the 0.25x2.0 to achieve better spectral resolution. The latter will achieve poor S/N at the shorter wavelength end of the G190H. Scientific objectives include C2H2 abundance and vertical distribution in both planets, aerosol properties, Raman scattering and trace molecular species. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. For each planet, a satellite will be acquired with blind pointng and an ACQ/FIRMWARE. An offset will be made to the planet center. FOS spectra will be taken of both Uranus and Neptune, with the G190H and G270H. Two apertures will be used, the 1.0 for maximum throughput and the 0.25x2.0 improved spectral resolution. After the spectra, and ACQ image will be taken to record the position of the FOS apertures on the planetary disks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST observations are required for access to the UV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. IUE spectra provide an excellent basis for calculating exposure time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. There are no special scheduling requests. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Planetary spectra will be divided by a published solar UV rocket spectrum, to convert flux to albedos. Albedos will be compared to atmospheric models which include absorption by gases such as C2H2, for which abundances and vertical distributions will be inferred. Comparison with comparable quantities derived from IR spectra will be important for verifying atmospheric structure models. The influence of Raman scattering on reflected Fraunhofer features and of aerosol scattering on continuum reflectivity will be investigated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
