Abstract After a blind-pointing maneuvre, to a point near the center of Jupiter, but offset 0.67 arc sec south along the central meridian, a series of FOS and GHRS spectra, covering the range from approximately 160 to 330 nm, will be obtained. The latitude chosen, 2 deg South, is as zonally uniform as possible. The planet will rotate under the HST aperture about once as the spectra are being acquired. The resultant spectrum will represent the zonal average spectrum at that latitude, at nearly unit local air mass. The spectrum will be analyzed for compositional and vertical information, using such species as NH3 and C2H2. A single FOS exposure will also be made, at high air mass, at the same latitude. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Caldwell YORK UNIVERSITY CANADA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The acquisition will be by blind pointing near the center of Jupiter. The target is actually 0.67 arc sec south of the center, along the central meridian. The position angle specified in the target list, level 2, includes the polar position angle, 23.74 deg east of north, plus 180 deg to obtain a southward offset along the central meridian. The size of the offset, 2 deg S lat, is chosen to point the HST at the most nearly zonally uniform latitude near Jupiter's equator. Planetary motion and parallax will be tracked during the spectroscopic exposures, but there will be no tracking of planetary rotation. The spectra will be taken over approximately one Jovian rotation period, including Earth-occultation and overhead time. FOS spectra (2 gratings, 2 apertures each) and GHRS spectra (G200M, one aperture, various positions) will obtain a zonally averaged spectrum of Jupiter from 160 to 330 nm, at nearly zero local air mass. One additional FOS spectrum will observe at the same latitude, at high local air mass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The HST is required for access to the ultraviolet. IUE data are insufficient to obtain the desired spectral information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. IUE spectra provide good estimates of exposure times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. If this program cannot be scheduled in mid-May, 1992, then it may be necessary to update some of the pointng parameters in the target list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The HST spectra will be divided by published solar rocket spectra to construct an albedo spectrum, which will be analyzed for abundance and vertical distribution information on various minor and trace species in the atmosphere of Jupiter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
