Initially, an acquisition image will be obtained, and two visual and two ultraviolet images will be made of the near stellar environment. One image at each color will be made with each occulting finger, giving two color information at essentially all position angles around the star. Later, FOS spectroscopy of selected areas (based on information in PC im ages from another program) will be obtained. Comment continued from CR form: of 4 exposures, which Caldwell will use as finder charts. Expect current proposal to be executed about 1-2 months after reference proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The ability of the HST to observe faint objects very close to bright ones is one of the most important advantages that the observatory has over ground-based telescopes. The material around Beta Pictoris is not faint, but it is within a few arc seconds of a fourth magnitude star. One can study the near-stellar environment from space, and the near-stellar region may be the most interesting. Furthermore, imaging from the visible to the ultraviolet, possible with the HST, spans a range where both ices and minerals are bright (the visible) to one where ices are bright and minerals are not (the ultraviolet). Generalized compositional inferences may be possible from the imaging. Follow-up spectra of selected regions, using the FOS, may be useful for more detailed compositional work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. There are no special scheduling requirements or real-time observations. The only demanding aspect will be to place the central star precisely on the FOC occulting fingers. There should be a reasonable interval between the imaging and the spectroscopy, to permit a reasoned selection of which regions to observe with the FOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. There are no special requirements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Color differences between the circumstellar material and the star will be studied for compositional information. If the material appears to be axially symmetric in orbital characteristics, then any axial variation in brightness would be studied for phase angle effects. If the material is not axially symmetric, the brightness variations could not uniquely be regarded as due to phase angle effects, but the variations themselves might be suggestive of where to obtain spectra. The images will be studied closely for evidence of bright regions, where material may preferentially be condensing into pre-planetary objects. The spectra will probably contain important signatures of the compositional characteristics of the circumstellar material. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. This star will certainly be observed by many other GTOs, and the observations should be coordinated as much as possible. We expect to have access to a VAX computer in the Dept. of Engineering at Stony Brook, to supplement the facilities at the STScI. Financial support for research assistance will come from the GTO contract of Caldwell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Five FOC images, all with Beta Pic on one of the two occulting fingers, will be obtained: f/288, F220W; f/96, F600M and F342W, both with each finger. The former is for maximum spatial resolution near the star. The latter 4 are for gross compositional information.
