S/N estimate based on IUE spectra, with FOC pixel binning to 2x2 (arcsec)^2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Images will be calibrated and binned as necessary to produce optimum information. Exposures are limited not only by photons but also by planetary rotation, so that standard S/N estimates are not meaningful. Estimates from IUE spectra of Jovian aurorae indicate that binning pixels to an extent that is consistent with smearing caused by planetary rotation will produce useful signal within ~ 10 minutes. System III LCM is constrained to be near 180 deg. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Auroral imaging of the north polar region of Jupiter will be performed with the FOC, using filters F140W and F152M in series, to reduce the red leak and provide reasonable sensitivity to H2 emission at 1600 A.
