OF ASTRONOMY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract The M31 spectra, taken with the slit along the major axis, will total 2 hours and will produce enough counts to get both the rotation curve and the velocity dispersion as a function of position along the slit, with 1-pixel resolution at the center and resolution degraded to several pixels farther out. The M32 spectra will also total 2 hours and will give a high-resolution rotation curve along the major axis. (The slit is probably too wide to get the velocity dispersion.) The NGC205 spectrum will get the rotation of the sharp nucleus. This program can be done only after the spherical aberration is corrected. Parallel exposures with the PC will be used to derive color-magnitude arrays of two M31 globular clusters and an outer field in NGC 205. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Prof. Ivan R. King UNIV. OF CALIFORNIA U.S.A. Dr. Philippe Crane EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY GERMANY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Long-slit spectra of the central few arcsec of M31 and M32, and the nucleus of NGC 205. Parallel exposures with PC on M31 globular clusters G233 and G142, and on an outer field in NGC205, all in F555W and F785LP, for color-magnitude arrays. All exposures in Cycle 9. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Spatial purity of the light is of the essence. This cannot be achieved in the present condition of the optics/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure times are based on known surface brightnesses and calculations of counts per pixel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Note that all FOC exposures have parallel WFC exposures (so that the true efficiency of HST usage is much higher than indicated by the percentage on the cover page). It is assumed that PSF's will be available without the need to add observations to this program to secure them. (Yes, PSF's will still be needed, on account of the diffraction pattern.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. At Berkeley we have a VMS cluster and a Sun cluster. I have a Microvax II GPX and a Sun IPC with a gigabyte disk. For software we have been using Vista, DAOPHOT, and IRAF/STSDAS. Although it is an unhappy fact that no one has yet arrived at the ideal method of doing stellar photometry on HST images, I am doing at least as well as anyone else and am in contact with most of those who are making efforts in this direction. My collaborators on the FOC IDT have access to all the resources of the Institute in general, and of the FOC group in particular. Crane has all sorts of resources at ESO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. Otherwise all I have gotten up to now is a pair of exposures on the center of Omega Centauri, which are in the early stages of reduction; the center of M32 and of the collapsed-core globular cluster NGC7099, also under reduction. In Cycle 1 I have put all of 1281 and all of the 1279 exposures on NGC6624. "The Current Ability of HST to Reveal Morphological Structure in Medium-Redshift Galaxies", King, I.R., et al.
