Abstract Deep high latitude observations will be made with the WFC in order to study cosmology using as probes: the clustering of galaxies, galaxy counts as a function of magnitude, evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, evolution of galaxy colors, galaxy morphology, and the distribution of galaxies in redshift. The observations consist of a strip of 36 overlapping WFC exposures with the wide I filter. The strip is oriented in such a way that the FOC f/48 aperture will lie along the strip. Parallel FOC exposures with a wide B filter are used to provide color information for a subset of the galaxies detected in the WFC exposures. In addition, two of the fields are observed in six colors with the WFC and three colors with the FOC to provide detailed color information on a sample of the galaxies. These exposures will also be useful for star count studies bearing on galactic structure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. The roll required to orient the FOC along the strip is the optimum roll on April 30 (any year). This is also the date when the ecliptic longitudes of the target and the Sun are 180 degrees apart which optimizes the exposures for dark time. All exposures must be obtained within plus or minus about 5 days of April 30 in order to avoid violating the roll constraint. Therefore, the exposures must be split into cycles in such a way that on the average, the observing time per cycle approximates the GTO time per cycle. (Since the cycles are less than one year in duration, some cycles will have no exposures and others will have many.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. An "average" galaxy (as opposed to a dominant cluster galaxy) has a core radius of only several hundred parsecs and falls off rapidly beyond the core. A core radius this small is unresolved (even by the HST) for distant galaxies. As long as the core radius is on the order of or smaller than a resolution element, the signal to noise is contributed almost entirely by the central pixel (even though most of the light is at larger radii). This is because the total light goes up with logarithm of the radius, but the total background light goes up with the square of the radius. Thus the ST will be unsurpassed for detecting "average galaxies" which are just the kind of galaxies required to perform statistical and correlation studies. Prior ground based work has already been described in the Scientific Justification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. A specific roll has been requested in order to (1) optimize the overlap of the WFC fields along the strip (with random rolls, there could be cases with no overlap) and (2) to orient the FOC f/48 aperture along the strip. Dark time has been requested in order to provide the maximum signal to noise for faint objects with a given exposure time. A day of observation has been chosen so that the observations will occur at very low Zodiacal light brightnesses when dark time is maximized. Un-interrupted exposures are necessary in order to minimize the WFC readout noise. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All data will be reduced to calibrated form using the ST ScI standard calibration pipeline. However, since calibrations are subject to change (especially early in the mission), calibrated data, raw (edited) data, and calibration data will be requested. The rest of the analysis will be carried out at Princeton with Physics department computing resources (currently a VAX 11/750 and associated peripherals). The images will be converted to catalogs of objects using software that I have developed over the past several years for my ground based program. The catalogs will than be analyzed for counts, correlations, redshift distributions, etc., again using existing software. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
