Abstract FOC filter and spectrographic observations are proposed of circumstellar HII regions around hot stars: one ring nebula around a Wolf-Rayet star and two planetary nebulae OVI- class central stars. The scientific aim is to study the morphology of the edge of these nebulae in different forbidden and semi- forbidden emission lines of CIII, OIII, Mg V and ArV, and the chemical abundance ratio's in the nebulae. The morphology is a powerful indicator for the origin of the nebulae (e.g.mass loss, ejection). The chemical abundance ratios, notably the C/O ratio, in the nebulae are significant measures on the evolutionary state of the central stars. The FOC enables observations, also in the visible wavelength region, at a spatial resolution at least 100 times as high as has been posssible so far. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. We propose to observe at least one WR ring nebula and at least two planetary nebulae through the FOC filters. For the exploratory research envisaged in the early observational phase, all observation have been limited to half-orbit integration, being most efficient to schedule. In all cases, there is no doubt that subsequent observations will be required to solve all related astrophysical problems that can be solved with ST regarding these objects. Only WR-ring nebulae and planetary nebulae with small angular size are proposed, as these are most compatible with the FOC field view. With small angular pixel size of the FOC, the expected cont rates per pixel are very low, so that in most cases the resolution will have to be lowered in order to get a resonable S/N ratio. The larger pixel size, the larger field of view and the higher transmittance of the broadband filters have led to the choice of f/48 observations for the short wavelength observations. The small planetary nebulae listed, are representatives of the class of planetary nebulae with OVI emission lines in the spectra of their central stars, thus having T > 50,000 K. The WR ring nebula is selected from the list of the WR ring nebulae by van der Hucht (1982, in: D'Odorico et al. Proc. ESO Workshop on "The Most Massive Stars", p. 157),on the basis of smallest apparent size. To cover larger, or complete WR ring nebulae, more observations are needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. High spatial resolution and UV sensitivity enable observations not available from the ground. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). All three institutes have sufficient resources to support this project. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. FOC filter ans spectrographic observations are proposed of circumstellar HII regions around hot stars: one ring nebula around a Wolf-Rayet star and two planetary nebulae OVI-class central stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
