Abstract We intend to observe a shocked molecular region in Orion by using the f/96 imaging mode of the FOC. The objective of this program is to resolve the spatial structure perpendicular to the direction of motion of the shock front and the derive information on the changes in grain characteristics across the shock by observing the variation in intensity and wavelength dependence of scattered light. Our target is a section of the bright bar between THETA^2 Ori and the Trapezium which is easily seen in continuum scattering as well as in nebular emission lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Justification of need for HST observations. Only the FOC can image at high enough spatial resolution in the near and far ultraviolet to resolve the internal structure of a molecular shock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13.
