Abstract It is proposed to observe star formation regions in several nearby spiral and irregular galaxies (present candidates being M33, IC1613 and M101). Observations with the FOC at f/96 through three filters, including a far UV filter, will overcome confusion problems and provide a statistics for hot stars yielding the luminosity function and the upper initial mass function. Observations with the far UV objective prism will allow to determine the far UV extinction law, and may be, the hydrogen column density and, hence, the gas to dust ratio. These observations will provide for the first time a complete study of the young massive stellar population and of the interstellar dust extinction outside our Galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. 1) 6 positions in M33 and IC1613 f/96, ID-zoom, 1800s (F165W, F320W, F430W) Note: a) ID-zoom is to increase the FOV (F320W is not available at f/48) b) the first exposure is duplicated with neutral density filter for calibration purpose. 2) 1 position in outer part of NGC5457 (M101) f/48, 2900s (F195W), 2500s (F430W) 3) 6 positions in M33 and IC1613 f/96, objective prism in far UV, 1800s broad constraints on orientation to avoid crowding by bright stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The study of young stellar populations in nearby galaxies (for instance M33, (m - M)_0 = 23.8) requires high angular resolution to resolve stars down to about M_V = -1 in crowded fields and UV response to select and classify the hot stars.
