Abstract It is proposed to use the HST/FOC to obtain images, at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths, of the continuum jet in the BL Lac/radio elliptical galaxy PKS 0521-36. The source is remarkable in showing diametrically opposite asymmetries at optical and radio wavelengths and may provide the best available opportunity to study collimated jets very close to the line of sight the same exposure will contain images of the blue nucleus of the galaxy. The linear spatial resolution provided by the FOC will be equivalent to that obtained on the M87 jet with ground-based observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Optical and ultraviolet imaging at 5500A and 2200A is planned. At both wavelengths a short exposure of a small area centered on the bright, variable nucleus is done to obtain a reliable estimate of its brightness. This followed at both wavelengths by imaging of an extended region, with a lower dynamic range, which covers the nucleus and the jet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Our available ground-based optical and UV satellite data are of limited value for the study of this object. With the IUE only the nucleus can be seen and the jet is at present not detectable in the ultraviolet. Ground-based data suffer a lack of resolution which again is particularly troublesome for studies of the jet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. We will use the software available at STARLINK in England and the ST European Facility in West Germany. The data will be reduced and analyzed in at least two institutions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Our institutions will fully support us and have software and hardware appropriate for reduction and analysis of ST data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. The FOC is used to obtain images of the active elliptical galaxy PKS0521-36 with the F/96 camera. Images at 5500A and 2200A will be used to study the variable nucleus and the jet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11. Address Information Name: I.
