Abstract Long-slit spectroscopy in the nuclear region of the narrow line active galaxy MK348 is proposed to study the morphology, velocity field and physical conditions in the narrow line region and the effects of the cosmic rays, responsible for the radio knots, on the kinematics and excitation degree of the gas. Description of proposed observations. We shall use first the FOC direct imaging mode in order to determine the precise location of the nucleus, and to look for any preferential extension or existence of condensations of the gas along the radio axis. We then plan to do spectroscopy with the slit along two axes: - first, through the radio knots at PA = 168 degrees - second, either through the nucleus at PA close to 45 degrees (inner HI major axis) if the extension of gas is large enough in this direction, or again at a PA close to 168 degrees with a small off-set from the nucleus (a value of ~135 degrees, PA of the minor axis of the inner HI distribution, would be of interest to investigate radial motions). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.
