Abstract The aim of the observations of NGC 1365 is to study: - the light distribution, kinematics and mass distribution in and around the Seyfert nucleus and the hot spots (including their rotation) with very high spatial resolution; - structures on a scale <0.1" which could shed light in the nature of the bright, compact nuclear radio sources; - differences on a small scale of the distribution of low (H-lines, [OII]) and high ([OIII], [NeIII]) excitation gas but, in particular, the anomalous kinematics (ejection) of the latter gas component; - the onset of expanding motions at the edge of the nuclear disk and related to the nuclear spiral and a possible spiral shock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Direct imaging mode ------------------- The f/96 imaging mode with FOC format 512x512 pixels should be used giving a 11.2"x11.2" field and a pixel size corresponding to 2.2 pc. This field would cover the nucleus and the two brightest hot spots. The exposures on the object would be: I 1. filter F502M 59 min [OIII] + H-Beta + cont. I 2. F470M 30 min cont (b) I 3. F501N 59 min [OIII] + cont. Exposure 1 should enable us to choose the precise optimum settings for the spectrographic slit. The narrow H-Beta filter F486N would make the transmission of the redshifted H-Beta emission very velocity dependent. From a combination of the three exposures above it should be possible to extract the H-Beta picture with the exception for a slight effect of differential reddening between 470 and 505 nm. Spectrographic Mode ------------------- To get information on non- circularity of motions two slit positions through the nucleus in two different position angles is a minimum. For one of these position angles the slit should be over the bright hot spot near the center of which is only 1.6" from one of the compact radio sources unresolved at 2 cm with the VLA. If the direct imaging would show a trace of this source, the exact position angle would be chosen to cover it. The second slit position should be chosen along the apparent minor axis as derived from the rotation of the nuclear narrow-line disk. The exposures would be in the f/48 spectroscopy mode, format 512x512 pixels: S 1. first order p.a. 63.4D (243.4D) 75 min S 2. --- " --- 138D (318D) 75 min ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. To study the structures on a scale smaller than 0.1" that are present according to radio results, rotation of hot spots and the structure and kinematics of the Seyfert nucleus at highest possible resolution ST observations are necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure 1 has to be obtained first for preparation of the spectrographic observations. Position angles for the spectrograph slit are given on the log sheet, but might be modified slightly after examination of the direct image 1. Comparison arc has to be used for radial velocity measurements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. We expect to perform the standard reductions and image processing with the software that will be developed at the ST/ECF at ESO or developed for the STARLINK system. A software for further processing and analysis of two- dimensional images and spectral data has been developed for the Stockholm Observatory computer by one of the proposers (S. Jorsater: Stockholm Obs. Rep. No. 22, 1984). The Stockholm Observatory has an Alliant FX/2 and an image processing system. It is expected that the analysis will be carried out on this system, probably with the MIDAS package and additional in house software. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The extragalactic research at the Stockholm Observatory receives annual support by the Swedish Natural Science Research Council. If accepted this project will also be supported by the Swedish Space Board. Complimented by the ESO/ECF facilities our data analysis capability will be quite adequate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. The aim of the program is to study the light distribution, kinematics and mass distribution in and around the Seyfert nucleus and nuclear hot spots in the barred galaxy NGC 1365. In particular differences in light distribution and kinematics as shown in H-Beta and [OIII] lines will be invesigated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
