Abstract We propose to observe the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 with the FOC using both the imaging and the long slit spectroscopic modes. Our aim is to continue our optical and ultraviolet studies of NGC 1068 using the much higher angular resolution available with the FOC. The main fields of interest are: the massive burst of star formation which takes place in the inner spiral arms and the high ionization emission line gas in between and around these arms and the energy supply of this high ionization gas far away from the nucleus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Two FOC images through the F150W filter should establish the location of the HII regions around the nucleus. In estimating exposure times we had to convert the observed IUE fluxes, which are an integral over typically 10" x 10" to fluxes per (arc sec)2. This requires an estimate of the distribution of the gas and stars which we are just trying to establish. Optical F/96 images of the [OIII] emitting gas and the continuum to clarify the exact position of the extended emission line gas around the NE spiral arms. A long slit far ultraviolet spectrum which covers the very bright NW HII region (r=10.9" PA=332D this is knot 1 of Snijders et al. and knot 5 of Schild et al.) and a bright HII region in the NW arm (r=15", PA=47D) with peculiar UV emission lines. From the IUE images alone the location of this gas is not clear; it might actually be the same as the high ionization interarm [OIII] gas identified by Balick and Heckman (1985), and not belong to the HII region. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ground-based observations are limited to a resolution of 1" to 2", which is simply not good enough in the crowded inner region of NGC 1068. The available IUE images have even lower angular resolution than the optical ground-based data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. If the F 150W filter does not support geocoronal OI emission we will need a solar zenith angle larger than 100 degrees to remove the remaining OI emission from the UV exposures. The need to observe NV 1240 rules out the use of F130LP for the spectrographic images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. We expect to use the RGO Starlink VAX 780 to do most, and perhaps all our data reduction and image processing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). We expect that RGO and the Astronomical Institute at Tubingen will support us. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. The Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1068 will be observed with the FOC using the long slit and imaging facilities. The object of the project is to study the massive starburst in the inner spiral arms and the extended emission line gas well away from the Seyfert nucleus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
