Abstract Direct FOC exposures will be used to map the narrow-line region [OII] and locate the centre in the continuum. A long-slit exposure in the visible will be used to a) study kinematics within a few pc of the nucleus; b) study line intensity gradients as a function of distance from the nucleus; c) enhance the broad emission line region relative to the stellar background. Description of proposed observations. The bulk of the time will be devoted to taking a long-slit spectrum at f/48 in first order Lambda-3600-5400. From Rose and Searle's data, the average surface brightness in the central 2x4.2 (arcsec)2 of M51 is 16.6mB per square arcsec, for which the signal:noise ratio in the continuum attainable in 3 hours is 7. However, if M51 has a brightness profile resembling that of M31 as measured by Light et al (1974), the central surface brightness is 14mB per sqaure arcsec giving a maximum signal:noise of 20 in 3 hours. Better ratios will be achieved in the emission lines, permitting variations in shift and width to be studied. The slit should preferably be oriented along the major axis at p.a.0d, giving the possibility of studying effects of galactic rotation on the emission lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ground-based observations are limited to a spatial resolution of 1 arcsec at best, corresponding to 50 pc, whereas with ST the resolution will be about 10 times as good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.
