This program is essentially a survey whose results increase in significance as more lines of sight through the local cloud are sampled. There is no preferred direction. We request that Sirius and all the bright B-star targets be sampled by the end of cycle 2. We will then review the data and assess the feasibility and usefulness of continuing the program in cycles 3-5. Cycles 2-3: Exposures 13-17 Cycles 4-6: Exposures 18-20 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The ST/HRS is necessary to detect and measure precisely the velocities and column densities of very weak interstellar resonance absorption lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Special observing strategies will be necessary to reduce fixed-pattern noise on spectra obtained with Echelle-A in order to obtain line profiles of high S/N. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Detect and identify shocked material as blue-shifted components of common interstellar lines. Measure velocities and determine column densities. Construct 3-D picture of the shock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13.
