Abstract I propose to use the HRS to study highly evolved stars, particularly the central stars of planetary nebulae. The study includes (1) an attempt to detect and measure the flux from extremely hot stars (T>150,000 K), (2) an investigation of hydrogen and carbon-rich central stars and their recent ejecta, (3) an investigation of the interaction of the wind from a central star with the surrounding nebula, and (4) follow-up spectroscopic studies of uv-bright stars discovered in globular clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Heap NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT USA CENTER ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Cycle 0: PC images of NGC 2440 continuum and nebula (He II and H-beta). Lines 94.000-94.002. Cycle 1: NGC 7027 and NGC2392 (central star and bipolar jet). Lines 200-214. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The resonance lines of the most abundant ions in the stellar atmosphere and in the nebula are in the ultraviolet. High-dispersion spectra of these lines help to define the physical properties, abundances, kinematics, etc. For some programs, pictures at high spatial resolution are also necessary to determine the nebular radius or to detect clots of nebular material. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. No special scheduling requirements are expected. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Target 1 is very faint. Observations of this objects should be carried out only in low-dark periods. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. HOT-STAR: Extract stellar contribution to the total flux. Determine stellar far- uv flux below Lyman alpha. Deduce stellar temperature and lower limit to stellar mass. C-RICH: Measure velocity and column density of each component of a nebular spectral line. Derive nebular abundances and physical properties. WIND-NEB: Measure velocity and column density of each component of a nebular line. Deduce physical picture of the region where the wind interacts with the nebula. NPN-GC: Determine stellar contribution to observed flux. Estimate continuum temperature of star. Use spectral features to deduce stellar properties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. We propose to study central stars of planetary nebulae, particularly (1) the extremely hot stars, (2) the carbon-rich stars and nebulae, (3) stars with strong winds that interact with the surrounding nebulae, and (4) uv-bright stars that will be discovered in globular clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
