Abstract The HRS will be used to obtain high signal/noise spectra of the 1980 - 3300 A spectral region of the M2 Iab supergiant Alpha Orionis. This full wavelength region will be observed at medium resolution, while 3 selected wavelength regions will be observed in the echelle mode. Exposure times have been chosen so that both the chromospheric emission line spectrum and the photospheric continuum and absorption line spectrum will be properly exposed. These observations will be combined and published in atlas format. It is hoped that this atlas will provide a standard against which high-resolution UV observations of other late-type stars can be compared. The observations planned on Alpha Ori are: G270M 1980-2552 SSA 13 (2x5.0min) exposures on 44 A centers G270M 2552-3300 SSA 17 (2x6.8min) exposures on 44 A centers echelle-B observations: EB-24 2327 A 60.0 min EB-22 2596 A 54.6 min EB- 20 2799 A 21.8 min G160M @ 1300 and 1655 A (consortium time,JB+DE+MJ+KC) wavecals are taken with all echelle data and at the first setting of each G270M WSCAN and with G160M 1300/1655 A spec. total S/C time = 13.0 hours ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The data required for this program consists of UV spectra not attainable from the ground. IUE has been used for a preliminary reconnaissance of Alpha Ori, but we now require (and wish to demonstrate) the higher sensitivity, wavelength resolution, and S/N attainable with the HRS on ST. Only HRS is capable of providing us with the very high precision line profiles, fluxes, and velocities needed to carry out the research outlined above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data will be reduced and analyzed primarily with in-house software developed for analysis of IUE data and with new software to be developed in-house explicitly for HRS. Software used during ground-based calibration of HRS at Ball Aerospace (Boulder, CO) by the PI will also be used in the reduction and analysis of these observations. Some use will probably also be made of the facilities at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Additional analysis may also be performed at the home institutions of other members of the HRS IDT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
