Abstract This proposal represents a two pronged attack aimed at understanding the detailed chracteristics of red giant winds in binary star systems. Red giant winds can provide the most massive, sustained form of mass transfer in binaries. The symbiotic and related stars, which contain red giant and hot companion stars, permit line of sight studies through a range of red giant atmospheric heights. The goal of this work is to attempt to define both the mechanism of rapid mass loss in red giant stars and the details of mass transfer to the companion stars. Such results can provide important constraints for both stellar and binary evolution theories. In each case we expect to derive density and temperature values for the red giant wind region and compare this to the present understanding of single star conditions where low temperature, dust and molecule forming, circumstellar envelopes prevail. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. SUMMARY OF HRS OBSERVATIONS CI CYG EG AND (only EG AND obs are contained in GRAT. WAVE EXPT(MIN.) this cycle 1 file) --------- G160M 1240 12.7 - " 1400 15 - " 1485 7.8 - " 1550 1.4 - G200M 1653 3.63 - " 1900 0.9 - G270M 2790 4.1 - " 2830 2.27 - G160M 1400 - 6.8 " 1550 - 3.2 " 1640 - 13.6 Cycle: 2 1 (priority 3) Companion wavelength calibration exposures will be taken along with each observation. EG And observations have been altered to account for spherical aberration effects (switch to LSA from SSA, increase exposure time, add aperture map) and for loss of side 1 (ECH-A switched to G160M). CI Cyg observations have not yet been changed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Each of these objects has been extensively studied with the International Ultraviolet Explorer in "high resolution" mode. The spectral resolution of IUE permits velocity determinations (with care) of only +/- 10 km/sec in the far UV. As a consequence, IUE studies of red giant winds (10-30 km/sec) and narrow absorption features are handicapped. The superior resolution and dynamic range of HRS is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Please do not schedule EG And observations (#18-30) during eclipse periods (10/88, 2/90, 6/91, 10/92), since spectral lines of interest will not be present at those times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Wavelength calibration exposures are required to allow us to obtain the maximum possible wavelength (and thus velocity) precision possible in the optical configurations chosen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data acquisitions will include spectral calibration. Collaboration with HRS team members will be pursued to ensure the application of optimum calibration information to remove instrumental effects and to derive absolute wavelengths, fluxes, and profile characteristics of observed spectral features. This done, lines of CI Cyg can be examined for profile asymmetries and systematic velocity differences. For CI Cyg and EG And, the O IV density diagnostic will be used. For EG And, the instrinsic profiles of the transient HE II 1640 A absorption and the complex C IV 1550 A features determined. In both cases, important fiducial observations will thus be obtained for further HST study of these very long period systems. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. The targets observed in this program are: 1. CI Cyg (cycle 2 or later) 2. EG And (cycle 1) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Two "symbiotic stars" (CI Cyg + EG And) will be studied with HRS, for their line and continuum properties at high signal to noise and moderate and echelle spectral resolution, in order to characterize the red giant winds, interactions and hot companion stars of these long period binaries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
