Abstract The goals of this program are to study in detail the chromospheric characteristics of one "dusty" star, R Dor, and to briefly examine the chromospheres of several other dusty stars. The High Resolution Spectrograph will be utilized to obtain moderate resolution spectra of the fluorescent Fe I emission lines near 2830 A and the large number of Fe II emission lines in the 2575 - 2800 A region for R Dor. In addition, the echelle mode will be used to obtain high resolution observations of the Mg II emission lines near 2800 A in R Dor and several other dusty stars. These data will be used to produce models of the outer atmosphere of R Dor and to determine the velocity structure of its wind. The Mg II profiles from all the spectra will be used to estimate outflow velocities and the strength of each star's chromosphere. The results will be used to gauge the effect of high dust levels on the outer atmospheres of cool luminous stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Justification of need for HST observations. The data required for this program consists of UV spectra not obtainable from the ground. IUE does not have the combination of sensitivity and wavelength resolution required to obtain the desired observations. Low-resolution IUE data have been acquired to confirm that the spectra of these stars do contain the chromospheric emission lines of interest, but the wavelength resolution and S/N of these spectra are far below that required to carry out the research outlined above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Wavelength calibration exposures are requested for all these observations to allow us to obtain the maximum possible precision in the wavelength and velocity scale assigned to these data. This accuracy is required to allow us to study the dependence of wind flow velocities on radius for R Dor and to allow us to determine an accurate outflow velocity for the other stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data will be reduced and analyzed primarily with in-house software developed for analysis of IUE data and with new software to be developed in-house. Software used during ground-based calibration of HRS at Ball Aerospace (Boulder, CO) by the PI, will also be used in the reduction and analysis of these observations. Some use will probably also be made of the facilities at the Space Telescope Science Institute. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
