Abstract We will make four types of observations of the nearby QSO 2130+099: (1) images with the PC: (2) UV maps of the nucleus with the GHRS N2 mirror; (3) UV spectrum of the nucleus with either FOS or GHRS/D1 and (4) UV spectrum of a knot in the spiral arm of the host galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 1194c PI: Sara Heap Proposal Title: IMAGING AND SPECTROSCOPY OF THE NEARBY QSO 2130+099: FUTURE-CYCLE CONTINUATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sara Heap NASA/GSFC USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. QSO 2130+099 is a nearby QSO with z=0.061 and v=14.4. Our recent studies of this object including image-deconvolution indicate that the host galaxy is a barred spiral with a central surface brightness, mu(B)=21.3 mag per sq. arcsec and a scale length of 4 kpc. We will continue our studies of this object with the HST/WFPC and GHRS by making four types of observations: (1) images of the quasar- host galaxy with the PC; (2) UV maps of the nucleus with the GHRS; (3) UV spectrum of the nucleus with the GHRS; and (4) off-nuclear ultraviolet spectrum of the host galaxy with the GHRS. We shall use the UV spectrum of the nucleus to search for "nearby" Lyman alpha clouds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Schedule in Cycle 3 AFTER the repair mission. Schedule the GHRS observations in dark time, so that geocoronal Ly alpha emission doesn't swamp the target. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Only the HST can give the required angular resolution and UV throughput and spectral resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Lines 20-22 call for GHRS field maps that are not standard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Astrometric reduction of the PC images will be done at the STScI in order to obtain precise coordinates of the region for GHRS observations. Reduction and analysis of the data will be done at GSFC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. We will obtain images and UV spectra of QSO 2130+099. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
