We will use the FOS at low resolution to determine which of three quasars with known 21-cm absorption have light at the wavelength of L-alpha in the absorption system. For those with enough light, we will make high resolution FOS exposures- (S/N 10-20) of the L-alpha region. Cycle 1: Exposures 1-2 (3C286),Exposures 6-8 (PKS1229-021), and Exposures 11-13 (3C196); Cycle 2: Exposures 4-5 (3C286), Exposures 9-10 (PKS1229-021), Exposures 14-15 (3C196) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. These measurements have been made in only one ground based object. Three additional objects are available where spin temperature and column depth in a quasar absorption line cloud can be made using UV observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The absorption lines occur short of L-alpha in the quasar, where the amount of light is generally unknown. Decisions will be made on whether or not to make high resolution observations after the appropriate low resolution observations are made. Exposure times may need to be varied. There cannot be too much time between low and high resolution observations because of the possibility of variations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be reduced and analyzed on a UCSD VAX computer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests.
