Abstract We will observe Lyman-alpha and CIII] in the QSO OX 169, whose Balmer lines show a feature which is either due to self absorption or narrow-line emission. Description of proposed observations. We will use the HRS in low resolution mode to observe Lyman-alpha, and at Z = 0.213. CIII] will be observed at medium resolution. Cycle 0: Low dispersion GHRS and FOS observations. Cycle 1: High Dispersion GHRS observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. To our knowledge OX 169 is the only QSO which shows such alleged self- absorption. UV observations are required for observing Lyman-alpha and CIII]. Observations have been attempted with IUE, however, the spectral shape and faintness of the object have precluded obtaining data of sufficient quality. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Individual wavelength calibrations are required to reduce the errors for intercomparison of absorption line profiles between different grating settings and between HRS and ground based data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be reduced and analyzed on UCSD VAX computers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Optical emission lines will be observed nearly simultaneously at Lick Observatory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s).
