Abstract In PKS 2135-147, we will measure absorption of Ly-alpha and C IV at the emission- line redhift. We will study the properties of z(a)=z(e) absorption lines in this, the lowest redshift QSO with a z(a)=z(e) absorption system. Wavelengths and line strengths, combined with future imaging, will elucidate the properties of these systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Beaver UC, SAN DIEGO USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Following a binary search target acq. with the blue tube, observations with G130H will yield S/N>20 per diode at the peak of Lyman alpha. Following this, a switch to the red detector (without a new target acq.) will yield the same S/N at the peak of C IV. The exposures will be 5100 and 2300s respectively. The 1.0" aperture will be used for the best measurements of resolved emission and absorption lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The IUE observations have detected the lines we will measure here. The S/N and resolution of HST observations are required to measure profiles and wavelengths accurate enough to identify the mechanism causing the absorption. Optical measurements have been made of these lines in high-redshift objects, but because of the high redshift, detailed observations of the environment of the object are not possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis will be performed using UCSD facilities, using existing software for absorption line measurements and emission line comparisons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We will arrange optical photometry and spectroscopy as close in time as possible to the HST observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. PI has received data from a number of GTO programs, SAT, and ERO programs. Related programs which have had observations are as follows: 1026 - ``UV Spectra of Low-Redshift-QSOs'': related, 1027 - ``UV Spectra of QSOs with z> 3.1'': not related, 1190 - ``FUV Emission LIne Profiles of W Serpentis Binaries'': not related Observations of UM 675 have shown that any He I Gunn--Peterson effect is small, that He I absorption lines are not strong, that predictions of the ``Lyman valley'' may be correct, and that low redshift Ly-alpha is more prevalent than expected. Observations of low redshift QSOs (including 3C 273) have shown even more clearly that Ly-alpha absorption occurs in greater numbers than expected, as well as showing emission--line profile differences more clearly than from earlier data. Unexpectedly, Ly-alpha is {\it narrower} than H-alpha. ``Far--Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Quasar UM 675 with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope'', E.A.Beaver, E.M.Burbidge, R.D.Cohen, V.T.Junkkarinen, R.W.Lyons, E.I.Rosenblatt, G.F.Hartig, B.Margon, and A.F.Davidsen, {\it Ap.J.(Lett.)}, {\bf 377}, L1, 1991. ``First Results from the GHRS: UV Spectra of a Starburst Knot in NGCC 1068'', Hutchings, J.B., Bruhweiler, G.C., Boggess, A., Heap, S.R., Ebbets, D.C., Beaver, E., Rosenblatt, E., Truonmg, K.Q., Perez, M., and Westmacott, R., 1991, APJ (Letters), 377, 1991.
