Abstract Zeta Oph is one of the best studied lines of sight for interstellar absorption lines. Interstellar observations represent one of the primary scientific objectives of the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph. The goal of this program is to observe weak absorption lines of interstellar molecules with the highest possible spectral resolution, S/N ratio, photometric precision and wavelength accuracy. Five weak molecular absorption lines will be observed. They are: H2O (1240A), N2 (1273A), HCl (1290A), CH2 (1410A), and CS (2576A) The observing sequence will be: 1. onboard acq into LSA followed by image 2. SSA peakup using "return" followed by image 3. 4. short ACCUM with star moved out of SSA by 1 arc second 5. compute new spybal offset and wavecal with SC2 6. 7. short accum mode exposure with star back in SSA 8. 1 set of FPSPLIT exposures to achieve very high S/N Lines shortward of 1800 use G160M, longward use Ech-B ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. There are no realtime requirements. We must have a working SSA peakup routine available. Note that there is non-standard commanding in several places: - image mode maps of SSA with no leading defcal - bright star line 50 - new spybal computed at exact carrousel position and echelle order lines 105,155,205,255,305,405 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Most of the reduction and analysis will be done with IDT facilities. The final product will be spectra of flux vs. wavelength or velocity from which line profiles, equivalent widths, central depths, and positions can be determined. Rotational components, isotopic species and discrete velocity structures will be identifiable. The precise calibration and data reduction techniques will be based on experience with two years of SV and other GTO observations. Corrections to the data for diode array irregularities, photocathode non-uniformities, Echelle ripple, optical vignetting, thermally induced motion, ST doppler shifts etc. etc. will be optimized and applied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
