Abstract One hot DA white dwarf, G191-B2B will be observed with the HRS. This object have been observed previously with IUE and reveal trace amounts of heavy elements either in the photosphere, or in a surrounding expanding halo. These observations have three scientific objectives: 1) to quantitatively test if diffusion and levitation can explain the observed abundances in these objects; 2) search for other heavier atomic species in the photosphere; and 3) by also observing the K-dwarf companion in this visual binary, to derive a gravitational redshift for the white dwarf. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. We wish to obtain high-dispersion HRS data at a minimum S/N ratio of 20/1 for sharp-lined features associated with hot white dwarfs. At this time, there is still some question about the sensitivity of the G140M shortward of 1300 A. We may want to refine these observations as improved calibration data become available. W1346 is to be observed in Cycle 1, priority 3. G191-B2B is to be observed in Cycle 0, priority 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The observed phenomena was discovered in the Ultraviolet. No hint of similar features is seen at other wavelengths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All data reduction and analysis is expected to be performed at NASA/GSFC. Radial velocities, equivalent widths, and other line profile information will be deduced. Available codes will be used to deduce photospheric abundances in W 1346. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). All the necessary software for analysis of the data is available at NASA/GSFC. F. Bruhweiler and Y. These observations have three scientific objectives: 1) to quantitatively test if diffusion and levitation or some other process can produce the observed abundances in these objects; 2) to analyze absorption profile information to obtain a clearer understanding of the mass loss process in these objects; and 3) to derive ionic column densities from the interstellar features to provide a clearer picture of the physical conditions of the Local ISM. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
