The first objective is to look line_3: for the possible shortward shifted absorption in strong UV lines (e.g. C IV, Si line_4: IV and N V) to follow up on the report of shortward-shifted absorption in the line_5: X-ray by Canizares and Kruper (Ap.J., 278, l99 - 1984). A detection of such line_6: absorption would provide additional support to the relativistic jet model, in line_7: which a gas jet from BL Lac nucleus is moving toward us. The second objective line_8: is to probe the galactic halo gas using those bright BL Lac objects as line_9: continuum background source. The lines to be probed include N V, C IV, Si IV, line_10: Mg II, Mg I, C I and H I. Based on the X-ray absorption, the absorption lines line_11: occurring in the putative jet are expected to be significantly broader than line_12: the absorption lines occurring in the halo. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: KONDO fname: YOJI inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! lname: BRUHWEILER fname: FRED mi: C. inst: CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA country: USA ! lname: BOGGESS fname: ALBERT inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! lname: URRY fname: C.
