Abstract Interstellar absorption line data obtained by the HRS for four selected nearby A and B stars with large v sin (i) will be used to probe the physics of the local interstellar medium. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding the phsical conditions in the region within 25 pc, especially the local cloud. Description of proposed observations. We wish to obtain high-dispersion HRS data at a minimum S/N ratio for spectral regions corresponding to interstellar lines in the target stars. At this time there is some question about the sensitivity of G140M shortward of 1300 A. we may want to refine these observations as improved calibration data become available. This program should be done entirely in Cycle 1 with all exposures of Priority 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Calculations indicate, as well as observations, that at leat two lines of sight would yield no detectable interstellar features at visual wavelengths with current detectors and ground-based telescopes. Only by observing in the UV does one have access to abundant, relatively undepleted atomic species. Previous UV results have clearly shown the potential of the HRS in studying the local ISM. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All data reduction and analysis is expected to be performed at NASA/GSFC. Column densities will be deduced from the equivalent width data. absorption profiles will be analyzed to extract radial velocities and other relevant velocity information. Finally, constraints upon the physical conditions in the local ISM will be derived. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
