Abstract Mira B is powered by accretion from the wind of the red giant companion. The aim of this work is to understand better the process of accretion by obtaining spectra and images of the flow. Description of proposed observations. The observations are of two sorts. First, we request spectra of the bright emission lines detected with IUE. Accurate line profiles should be compared with models for the inflow. Second, we request an image in H beta light to see if there is some collimation or other sort of geometrical alignment of the outflow that is apparently inferred from the P Cygni profiles in the IUE data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. 1. Ultraviolet lines are not detectable from the ground. 2. The scale of the system is 1"; this is too close a seperation for good ground based observations. 3. Mira is usually quite bright, it is difficult to observe Mira B with a bright nearby star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The HRS data will be reduced with the HRS team software at Goddard. The FOC data will be reduced by the FOC team members associated with this project. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. UCLA has a VAX and a helpful staff for our departmental computer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. The aim of this work is to understand better the process of accretion onto Mira B from its red giant wind companion and to see if there is any outflow powered by the gravitational accretion.
